Before learning about CC I would offer my photography to anyone who asked to use it, but after finding out about Creative Commons I loved it because it was the easiest way to offer my photography (and videos) to anyone who wanted to use it. — Lan Bui
Overview
Lan Bui is a photographer and video maker born in New York state who now lives in sunny Orange County California. He is heavily involved in promoting new media, teaching new media literacy and sharing his media with the world. Also, he is one of the organizers of "the greatest web-video awards show of all time" The Winnies held in Los Angeles in 2007.
License Usage
"Depending on the photography I am doing, I release it under different licenses. Typically I use CC-by-nc-sa but have been seriously considering using CC-by-sa to open up my images to even more people."
Even though Lan has had one fairly bad experience with regard to someone using his CC licensed material incorrectly he is still very happy to see others using his work correctly under the license. And, overall, people do use his work in new ways consistent with his wishes which are enumerated by the CC license he chooses: "I have had a few very positive experiences with people using my work through a CC license."
Motivations
Lan was motivated to use CC licenses after seeing others in his community begin to talk about them and use them.
"The two people that greatly impacted me knowing about CC would be Jay Dedman and Ryanne Hodson. Before learning about CC I would offer my photography to anyone who asked to use it, but after finding out about Creative Commons I loved it because it was the easiest way to offer my photography (and videos) to anyone who wanted to use it."
Lan also echoes the thoughts of other artists using Creative Commons; the idea that your work is, in a way, an advertisement for yourself and future work. Lan expresses this in this way: "I think that people pay me for my time and talent, not for the actual images I deliver."
