Before you leave home
Visa and Entry Requirements for Portugal
If you haven't already applied for your visa, it may be too late. See here https://summit.creativecommons.org/travelling-to-portugal/
Accommodations
CC HQ and scholarship recipients are staying at My Story Tejo.
Our CC Portugal team kindly put together suggestions for other hotels https://summit.creativecommons.org/accommodations-in-lisbon/
Currency
Portugal uses Euros (€). See how much your home currency is compared to EUR! https://www.oanda.com/currency/
Lisbon Weather & Terrain
In May, the weather in Lisbon gets up to the low to mid 20's (Celsius) during the day and mid-teens in the evening. You may see a bit of rain. Be sure to have a jacket and long pants. Lisbon has many hills so if you are walking around, you will want to have comfortable shoes. In the event of rain, you may find the beautiful cobbled sidewalks very slippery so please be careful.
Electricity
Portugal uses Type F for their plugs and sockets. Be sure to bring along an adapter if you are coming from a country that does not use the same type. https://www.power-plugs-sockets.com/portugal/ It's a good idea to mark your own adapter so you can tell it's yours. Maybe a sticker or some washi tape or even your initials with a marker.
Language & Maps
People in Lisbon speak Portuguese. Young people and people working in restaurants and shops in Lisbon know enough English for a basic conversation, so it is possible to get by speaking only English. Spanish is widely understood (but Portuguese do not speak Spanish, so do not say "Gracias" and "Adios" just to be polite; say "Obrigada" and "Adeus" instead). Older people might also have some knowledge of French. Maybe you can download a translation app to your phone to help out.
If you are not able to get a sim card for the time you are in Lisbon, you may want to download some offline maps of Lisbon to your phone.
Water
At the Museu Do Oriente, to avoid waste, there will be no bottles of water. Instead, there will be jugs or pitchers of water. Please pack a water bottle so you can fill yours up and carry it with you.
After you arrive
At the Lisbon Airport
It's a good idea to buy a "7 Colinas Card" at the airport and load some funds on it so you can travel around between venues. The transit ticket system can be a bit complicated so having a card is a bit easier.
They are .50€ and you can load some money on it right there at the airport metro station. Single rides are €1.50 and a day pass is €6.30.
At My Story Tejo
For those who received scholarships and for CC HQ, you will be staying the the My Story Tejo Hotel. Mari reached out a few weeks ago to confirm your room and roommate. Please look back in your inbox if you did not see it. Else feel free to reach out to us at summit@creativecommons.org
Check in at the hotel is 3pm. If you arrive earlier than that, they are willing to store your luggage for you so you can leave the hotel and come back later. Check out is 11am.
CC has paid for the room and tax for scholarship recipients. Any other charges will be yours. The hotel may ask for a deposit for incidentals that they can take by credit card or by cash.
Travel between the airport and the hotel
It might be a nice idea to check in the #cc-summit slack channel to see if others are arriving at the same time as you.
Taxi - A taxi should cost you about 20€ and be about 15 to 20 minutes.
Uber, Cabify, MyTaxi - you may have one of these apps installed on your phone to arrange rides. After you pick-up your luggage, you should look for the passenger pick up area labeled "TNC/Rideshares" to meet your driver.
Public Transit - Look for signs in the airport for ground transportation. You will board the metro at Aeroporto station and get on the train in the direction of São Sebastião, ride it for 9 stops then change trains at Alameda station. Board the train towards Cais do Sodré and ride it south for 6 stops. Get off the train at Rossio station and walk one minute to R. Condes de Monsanto 2 (My Story Tejo Hotel). It is a good idea to look at your route before you are in Lisbon so you are familiar with the route and map.
Travel between venues
It's a good idea to buy a rechargeable green-coloured "7 Colinas" or "Viva Viagem" transport card at the airport. The transit ticket system can be a bit complicated, so having a card is a bit easier.
The card is valid for metro, trams (electrico), urban trains, most buses and ferries. The card costs €0.50 and doesn't include any trips. You can load some money on it right there at the airport metro station, or at the ticket machines (with instructions in English) located in any other metro or train stations.
The card can be charged in different modes:
1) Single ticket: single ticket valid for bus and metro ("Carris/Metro") (costs €1.50 and is valid for 1h00); single ticket valid for trains ("CP") (costs vary depending on the journey, and is valid for 1h30)
2) Day pass: day pass for metro, buses and trams ("Carris/Metro") (costs €6.40); day pass for metro, buses, trams and trains ("Carris/Metro/CP") (costs €10,55)
3) Zapping (minimum charge € 3.00): you can use it in buses (costs €1.35 and is valid for 1h00), in metros (costs €1,33 each journey), and trains (costs €1.90 and is valid for 2h00).
Be aware: This card lets you load just one kind of ticket at a time, so you cannot load new tickets if there are any valid tickets still on the card. Therefore, for instance, if you have put a single bus/metro ticket onto the card, you cannot charge Zapping money onto it until the ticket has been used. You will need to have 2 cards, if you want to have different tickets at the same time.
My Story Tejo to Museu do Oriente
Option 1: Metro + Train Walk a minute or two to Rossio Metro Station. Get on the metro from Rossio towards Cais do Sodré. It's just two metro stops until Cais do Sodré, which is the last metro station of the green line.
In Cais do Sodré you have to transfer from the metro station to the train station. Follow the signs, up to the Cais do Sodré train station. Get on a train from Cais do Sodré train station to Alcântara-Mar train station. Check the departures/arrivals boards to see which trains stop in Alcântara-Mar. The train ride takes about 3 minutes. Walk about 5 minutes to the Museum.
The entire journey should take 20 minutes, but if you are not familiar with the transport system, you should leave yourself ample time (recommended: 40 minutes) to get to the venue.
Option 2: Tram
Walk a minute or two to Tram 15E stop, in Praça da Figueira.
Get on the tram 15E (towards Algés). Ride for about 15 minutes (6 stops). Get off at Cais da Rocha.
Walk about 10 minutes to the Museum.
The entire journey should take 30 minutes.
Option 3: Bus
Walk a minute or two to Bus 714 stop, in Praça da Figueira.
Get on the bus 714 (towards Outurela). Ride for about 15 minutes (10 stops). Get off at Avenida Infante Santo.
Walk about 10 minutes to the Museum.
The entire journey should take 30 minutes.
Other options:
You can walk from the hotel to Cais do Sodré Train Station (20 minutes walking), and from there take the train to the Museum.
If you wanted to walk, it would take about one hour. If you choose to walk, please do leave yourself lots of time in case you get lost!
If you wanted to take a taxi or other ride, it would take about 15 minutes.
Museu Do Oriente to Capitolio
Walk 5 minutes to the bus 720 Picheleira/faria Vasconcelos and ride it for 9 stops. Get off at Marquês de Pombal and walk 10 minutes to Capitolio.
If you wanted to walk it would take you about one hour.
My Story Tejo to Capitolio
It is just a 15 minute walk. Take a look at the map before you leave. If you wish to take transit, you could take bus 208 Fetais from Rossio station, for two stops, then walk over to Parque Mayer, where you will find Captiolio.
If you take a taxi to the venue, it should be about 5 minutes.
Capitolio to My Story Tejo
It's just a 15 minute walk back to the hotel. Or you could take the 207 Fetais back to Rossio station and walk the one or two minutes back to the hotel.
If you take a taxi back to the hotel, it should be about 5 minutes.
SIM Cards & Cellphones
There are kiosks in the airport where you can get a temporary sim card. It should cost about 15 or 20 EUR for a sim card with data for a week or so. MEO or Vodafone are both reliable carriers.
If you aren't able to do this at the airport, you can look for other locations in Lisbon through each of their websites:
