CC and copyright reform miniconference

  • Description: We are hosting a miniconference on 21 August (day before CC Summit kickoff) about the interaction of CC license stewardship and global copyright reform activities. We aim to increase knowledge of and involvement in these issues, present cases of how these two approaches are dealt with in parallel by involved affiliates, and discuss direct expressions of support for reform action. Evading a Two-Edged Sword - A Differential Approach for Advocating CC

  • Description: "What are our goals, as members of the international CC affiliates network, when attending local conferences, meetings with stakeholders or giving presentations in various forums? Is it to promote the actual use of CC licenses? To promote free/open culture? To educate the public about copyright law? Are we trying to advocate abstract values or practical tools? Should we take an ideological standpoint or a pragmatic approach? As one of the early chapters to join the international affiliate network, since the launch on 2005, the CC-Israel team had the opportunity to speak in numerous occasions in front of different types of audiences; from school kids to parliament members, from bloggers to museum curators and from NGOs to collection societies. While, generally speaking, reactions were positive and constructive, sometimes the outcome of such advocacy efforts were not quite as we intended or expected them to be. For instance, when promoting Creative Commons licenses in a bloggers meetup, are we supporting open content or are we over-educating about copyright? Will a presentation for school children advance open education efforts or strengthen the scary campaigns of the BSA? Should we address content producers and content consumers with uniform themes or with specifically tailored notions? Our presentation will begin with examples of different Israeli “case-studies” and the lessons learned during 8 years of advocating Creative Commons in Israel. We will then present our idea of a differential approach, promoting different, specific aspects of the project vis-a-vis different types of audiences. Sharing and discussing past experiences and future strategy among affiliates, old and new, will hopefully help improving the effectiveness of local and global advocacy efforts."
