Power of Open 2
Have affiliates contribute case studies from their jurisdictions/regions to a website over a specified time, with the best case studies then selected and published in a Power of Open 2 booklets. Similar to the existing case studies project, but with a deliberately international focus; a more streamlined style for case studies; a separate website (so can be promoted and searched more effectively); and an incentive to create quality case studies (ie possible publication).
Contact: Jessica Coates; Jane Park
Pros:
- Engages affiliates and draws on their knowledge and expertise, without too much effort on their part
- Showcases CC as an international movement
- Gives recognition to best practice CC adopters
- provides examples of how CC is being used across multiple domans
- Builds on the success of Power of Open 1
- Creates a usable resource, including materials that can be used by individual affiliates
- Good potential for publicity, based on case studies chosen
Cons:
- Similar to existing case studies project
- need to ensure quality of case studies
Costs:
- website design
- printing and design
- publicity and coordination
CC Global Resource Archive
Create a dedicated website/archive where CC affiliates can contribute CC educational resources their team has produced in their local language. Could include everything from fact sheets to slideshows to animations to videos of presentations. The goal is to to recognise the work being undertaken by affiliates while at the same time create collection of multi-lingual, international resources all aimed teaching people about what CC is and how it works. Ideally at least one resource would be provided by every CC affiliate.
Contact: Jessica Coates
Pros:
- uses 'stories' approach to teach about CC
- low cost and low effort
- engages and recognises the work of CC's broader global community, without placing undue pressure on individual teams - teams can choose to contribute existing resources or create new ones
- promotes CC as a global movement, and recognises the work of CC affiliates
- creates a useful resource that fills a gap by making multi-lingual CC material more readily identifiable and available
- could potentially be left open at end of celebrations, allowing affiliates to continue to contribute resources indefinitely
Cons:
- not 'showy' or likely to lead to significant publicity
Costs:
- creation and curation of website - preferably not on existing wiki, to make it more of a 'showcase'
- some publicity, again to make it a 'showcase' engagement activity
- affiliates will have to pay for any new resources produced
CC Viral Pinata
Create a virtual 'pinata' that can be emailed to people, containing CC-licensed materials. This could be in the form of a digital object or link.
Contact: Diane Cabel, Jon Philips
Pros:
- Engages with the general public
- Creates a minimum effort way for people to celebrate and show support for CC
- Could go viral
Cons:
- If it doesn't go viral will have minimum impact
- Would need technical expertise to establish how to do the pinata/if it's possible
Costs:
- Technical contractor to create the pinata
CC Global Festival
Run a week of CC events and activities online, similar to OER week. Events could include webinars, salons, workshops, parties, videos, mash ups etc. Anyone can contribute an event or activity, including affiliates, creators, friends of CC, the general public etc.
Contact:
Pros:
- high engagement potential; open to everyone, not just those already involved in CC
- low cost - just setting up website and publicity
Cons:
- would need to 'create a buzz' to encourage participation
Costs:
Translate Public Domain Works
Have each CC team translate a single public domain/open work into their own language, or translate a public domain work from their region into another language, then remix them with free culture works, graphic material from the public domain, etc. Culminating in a fun/creative finale on the 10th anniversary. All resulting products would be released under CC licences. Could be run as a competition.
Contact: Alek Tarkowski
Pros:
- Showcases CC as an international movement
- Highlights the importance of the public domain
- Affiliate engagement at low cost
Cons:
- Using a public domain work would not be 'directly' CC
- would need to work to get 'buzz' around it
Costs:
- minimal - publicity and coordination
