Describe the project you are proposing as clearly as possible in just five sentences.

Radio Ati is an alternative and independent media, which its origins are, based on the necessity of Movimiento Ati (Ati Movement) to count on different channels to spread the information that compiles and generates for more than four years in the Lake Atitlan’s basin by means of a printed magazine and other products. It has like main objectives: 1.– Local dissemination of information of general interest, in the subjects of Art, Ecology, Original Culture and Freedom of Expression; and 2.- To extend the cover of the journalistic and of the artistic work of the members of Movimiento Ati adhered to this particular project. Gradually developed is the implementation of Radio Ati, initiating with the production of a weekly radio-magazine as lance product that facilitates the implementation of an audio channel in permanent by means of a rig in Internet.

Detail the tangible project output (e.g., paper, blog post, written materials, video/film, etc.; this would be in addition to the final written report that successful grant recipients will be expected to deliver to CC at the conclusion of the project).

The radio-magazine Radio Ati is a weekly program of 12 minutes duration, produced in the municipality of Panajachel, department of Sololá, from the Guatemalan western highlands.

Its projection is at Central American level, supported for the effect by the network of Pacto por la Vida, the Atitlan Community site and the Guatemalan Newspaper, being its objective public Hispanic-speakers with Internet access and empathy by the social environmental matters and/or radio listeners to catch in an expansion process from the Atitlan region.

Its transmission is put forward by means of Internet rigs, communitarian radio and other that access to program several times per week.

The content is based on the four thematic axes that Movimiento Ati had been working for more than four years, being these: Ecology, Art, Original Culture and Freedom of Expression.

Describe the community you are targeting. How would the project benefit the community?

The Central American region owns so many characteristics in common that its integration in several levels is imminent. Its history is compound of colonists, dictatorials and similar interventionists. Their environmental, political and economic problems are almost always the same; In addition, at the social level, the communities share the negative effects of the centralization of the states and its main services, including the massive mass media, that among all, diminish the general realities of the population and devisualize the successful regional and local actions that would have deserved broadcasting for the collective development and the fortification of the Central American identity. As well, the Lake Atitlan region and its natural and social particularity, owns multiple successful experiences in the thematic fields, which worked by Movimiento Ati, same ones that have not been socialized efficiently within their inhabitants by the existing shortcomings in the fields of the communication. The important environmental, communitarian and artistic experiences which are generated in this surroundings, should also be spread beyond the department of Sololá, reason of them often representing ignored viable actions by social and political leaders, much less by the population.

Radio Ati will benefit to the local populations by means of the enlargement of its cultural and ecological store, fundamental in the formation of a collective criteria able to influence in major decisions for its community.br />

What is your relationship with the community you are targeting? Why are you the best individual/organization to lead this project? Do you have prior experience in related projects?

Movimiento Ati works in the Atitlan area from its foundation, in November of 2005. In this lapse of time 21 issues of Ati Magazine have been published, 17 cultural festivals, 4 events for journalists (2 writing workshops and 2 encounters), 4.- qualifications in the audio-visual subject, 6 mediatic radio support programs to organized sectors, 14 campaigns at a departmental level (Sololá) and 1 in Quetzaltenango, 12 televising campaigns in 4 systems of cable television. Now it counts with three pilot programs of Radio Ati.

How will you measure and evaluate your project’s impact - on your main participants? Other contributors? On the larger community?

By means of the participation in the Internet forums, as well as the attendance to events that by this means are summoned. We are going to monitor the advance and growth of the cover of the radio, which repeats the program and the publications that generates in written press, radio and televising.

How many participants do you expect to be involved in your project? How will you seek and sustain their involvement?

Initially it is count on the participation of three electronic means for the diffusion of the program (www.eco-book-net, www.atitláncommunity.com, www.elperiodico.com.gt) as well as the broadcasting Pana-Radio. It claims the progressive adhesion of other means in Internet and radio broadcasting stations, as a result of promotional campaigns directed specifically to this sector. The link will be based upon the continuous communication that would have been done for the weekly delivery of each transmission. The increase in the audience of the program will look for, by means of incipient campaigns, inviting the population to listen to the program. Musicians, artists and experts in different subjects also will incorporate themselves in each transmission and their data will be collected and systematized via the internet network.

Describe how your project will benefit Creative Commons' mission to increase the amount of creativity (cultural, educational, and scientific content) in "the commons".

By means of the production and transmission of each Radio Ati broadcast, that will provide with fresh and alternative information to circulate among commons.

Describe what technologies and tools your project will use. What kinds of technical skills and expertise do you bring to the project? What are your technical needs?

Thanks to the Movement Ati contributions and UICN/Pacto por la Vida, eventually is in disposition a basic digital recording studio, for the production of the program. It is expected the creation of an independent Internet area to which will be used calculation equipment and permanent connection to Internet. The human work equipment is conformed by personnel with previous extensive experience in the digital audio production, as well as in cultural, environmental and social journalism. In addition, it will be required of audio registry, video and photographs portable equipment.

What challenges do you expect to face, and how do you plan to overcome them?

The major challenge is to obtain the necessary audience that actions support for a greater cover of the program. In addition, its promotion through electronic means and advertising guideline in the transmission means, are pretended to carry out cultural festivals that contribute to promote Radio Ati mark, as well as to generate expectation in surroundings of the program. Periodically will be implemented press plans in which contents of interest for the cultural and environmental sections of conventional means are promoted.

How do you plan to sustain your project after the Creative Commons funding has ended? Detail specific plans. How do you plan to raise revenue to continue your efforts in the future?

We hope in the medium term, to count on the sufficient cover and audience to attract advertising agencies/marks, which are interested in supporting by means of advertising guideline. Here we have many advances by the previous experience of the imprinted Ati Magazine. While that happens, we will continue generating collection events and knocking doors in international cooperatives that help with support to the expansion process and of the product professionalism, factors that will guarantee its future self-sufficiency.

How can this project be scalable, or have a scalable impact?

The transmission of the program in different means, in different regions and countries, constitutes the first form of the project replica. Parallel, it is expected that the program motivates other producers to the accomplishment of independent radio programs.

What resources and support do you expect Creative Commons to provide to your project to ensure its success (if any)?

We expect the support for the technology acquisition, expenses of coordination, internet access as well as the official site posting for the program.

Describe how your organization currently communicates with its community members and network partners. (100 words)
