Describe the project you are proposing as clearly as possible in just five sentences.
This year many iberomerican countries celebrate the bicentennial of their independence and despite the passing of time (for public domain purposes), it is still difficult to access content related to these events.
The information that circulates is soon rendered obsolete due to technology, and very little of it circulates on the most popular internet channels, thus enjoying some access.
This project seeks to make use of Wikipedia as the most popular content platform on the Internet, as is being done in Argentina http://www.wikimedia.org.ar/wiki/Bicentenario, which will articulate Colombian content within the bicentennial rubrik and stemming from educational and public initiatives that have started circulating educational resources online that may be reused for teaching and learning.
Detail the tangible project output (e.g., paper, blog post, written materials, video/film, etc.; this would be in addition to the final written report that successful grant recipients will be expected to deliver to CC at the conclusion of the project).
The end product will be the integration of materials within the Wikimedia projects, similar to that conducted by the Asociación Civil Wikimedia Argentina (Argentinian Civil Wikimedia Association), integrating content with text, images, audio recordings, etc. that could thus circulate better and easier. Wikipedia users, interested in Colombian history, educators, researchers, students, etc. The content added to the Wikimedia project benefits from the site's broad audience, from the growing community that obtains information and reuses its content, its clarity and legal certainty associated with the site.
Describe the community you are targeting. How would the project benefit the community?
Wikipedia users, interested in Colombian history, educators, researchers, students, etc. The content added to the Wikimedia project (especially the spanish speaking sites) benefits from the site's broad audience, from the growing community that obtains information and reuses its content, its clarity and legal certainty associated with the site.br />
Karisma is an affiliate of Creative Commons and active promoter of the Wikimedia projects in Colombia.
Through its work in the educational sector Karisma has developed bicentennial-related content that can contribute to the project, and is aware of several public and private initiatives that it can articulate as open content online, migrating information to new content platforms.
Carolina Botero is active Co-leader of Creative Commons in Colombia involved on educational projects.
How will you measure and evaluate your project’s impact - on your main participants? Other contributors? On the larger community?
Ways to measure: 1. Quantity of contents included in the Wikimedia projects with proper analysis 2. Multiple sources 3. Number of visits to content, edits, etc.
How many participants do you expect to be involved in your project? How will you seek and sustain their involvement?
The core group would be 3 people including Laura Martinez a commited librarian with expertise on information management. We expect to encourage a community of volunteers to be added to this core group and to broaden the content base.
Describe how your project will benefit Creative Commons' mission to increase the amount of creativity (cultural, educational, and scientific content) in "the commons".
Wikimedia projects are currently in the top of the "commons" content providers in the web regarding "free" and "open" content (licensed and under public domain). Without any doubt the platform shares the mision and philosophy of Creative Commons regarding the "commons" and by doing so will increase their impact.
Describe what technologies and tools your project will use. What kinds of technical skills and expertise do you bring to the project? What are your technical needs?
No special skills or expertise are required different from those that hundreds of wikipedians have and can be developed by almost anyone.
What challenges do you expect to face, and how do you plan to overcome them?
The most important challeges are: 1. To be able to properly identify contents that are on the public domain or can be licensed under ccbysa. We will rely on the expertise of Karisma`s staff and on the fact that the most interesting material is already more than 150 years old. 2. The scalability of the project depends on the possibility of institutions deciding to contribute this material. Since most of them are public or educational related institutions we are confident "open" and "free" speech can be good arguments.
How do you plan to sustain your project after the Creative Commons funding has ended? Detail specific plans. How do you plan to raise revenue to continue your efforts in the future?
The project will be feed mainly on content provided by private institutions related to the educational sector, or public institutions such as libraries and museums. We believe this can turn out to be a worthwhile project for them and their objectives, Karisma will be able to join efforts with them to provide sustainability to the project.
How can this project be scalable, or have a scalable impact?
This project scalability depends first on the wikimedia platform. The high interactivity of the platform allows different institutions and individuals to provide materials as the main resource. The project can be promoted also by special networks such as www.eduteka.org inside the educational sector promoting a remix culture
What resources and support do you expect Creative Commons to provide to your project to ensure its success (if any)?
There are 2 possible means of support; the first one is the financial support that will allow the startup of the project by showing others the possibilities and impact of an open decision, and the second is to promote the project in CC`s networks to increase its impact
Describe how your organization currently communicates with its community members and network partners. (100 words)
Currently the communication channels are:
* E-mail * Website * Academic Events * Social Networks
