Describe the project you are proposing as clearly as possible in just five sentences.

The Social Festival Model is a method to stimulate organizational co-creation using a free application, a model based on 'Wikinomics' to achieve collaboration in an open source business model. Through this model, the Incubate Festival (previously ZXZW) has made its whole business model transparent through Internet. Because of this open source mentality, all the subsidy applications, annual reports and marketing plans are made public and adjustable for fresh perspectives. Everybody who thinks they can contribute something to the festival can have a say in the organization and can also re-use all plans, since they are licensed with the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-Share Alike 3.0 License.

Detail the tangible project output (e.g., paper, blog post, written materials, video/film, etc.; this would be in addition to the final written report that successful grant recipients will be expected to deliver to CC at the conclusion of the project).

At this moment, the Social Festival Model is up and running at www.socialfestivalmodel.org. In our own opinion, the Social Festival Model has to be further developed to acquire actual reason for existence.

Developing the Social Festival Model further means investing a lot in getting people connected. We need to market it in an international context, and need to get input and feedback for this development from peers. This means: - Marketing the Social Festival Model internationally together with a promoter. Incubate will hire somebody that is familiar with the context of the Social Festival model, and that is able to get it under the attention at marketing related international websites and magazines. Resulting this, international peers will have to begin writing along with the Social Festival Model. - Getting information from different people in different segments of the cultural business. Through interviewing these people, asking them their feedback we can qualitatively improve the Social Festival Model and make it more attractive. Questions that need to be asked are, amongst others: Would the model be useful for your company, Would you be interested in writing and developing this model, What could be negative aspects of this model, What could be improved, and how can people be connected with this model? - Organizing presentations of the Social Festival Model for other organisations. At these presentations, the whole course of building and developing the Social Festival Model will be explained. Questions that will be answered at this presentation will be: What has the model meant for Incubate, and what has it meant for the cultural scene, what has been the response, positive and negative aspects and: has it been a success so far? - Using best practice to implement new technologies into the Social Festival Model. Through testing and developing, we would like to add technologies such as Get Satisfaction. This is an online tool to create customer relations using input and feedback from your community to recruit ideas or solving problems. - Documenting the process and media attention. Incubate will arrange an online location, such as a blog, where the progress is accessible for everyone. - Resulting the above, the objective is to make the open source business model applicable for other cultural organizations.

Describe the community you are targeting. How would the project benefit the community?

There are three distinctive target groups: people/organisations that are interested in the Incubate Festival, in the cultural scene in general and in open source innovation.

All three target group benefit from this project, because they would get an introduction into the Social Festival Model, in innovation in the cultural scene (more specifically in open source development), and are able to re-use the plans of the Incubate Festival, when licensing them under the same Creative Commons conditions.br />

What is your relationship with the community you are targeting? Why are you the best individual/organization to lead this project? Do you have prior experience in related projects?

Incubate is a festival on artistic development and innovation in the cultural scene. We are the first organisations to apply this kind of open source business model in our environment. We have a strong relationship with the visitors of our festival, and now would like to invest in getting other cultural organisations involved in our festival, getting them involved in open source development in the cultural scene, and introduce them in working and licensing their works with Creative Commons.

How will you measure and evaluate your project’s impact - on your main participants? Other contributors? On the larger community?

A positive project result would mean the fulfilment of the project output mentioned above: getting a promoter to market the Social Festival Model internationally, retrieving input from other cultural organisations, giving presentations on the model, implement different other technologies, documenting all output (for instance on a blog), and getting other organisations to implement the model as well.

How many participants do you expect to be involved in your project? How will you seek and sustain their involvement?

Participants are retrieved in the existing network of Incubate Festival for organisations within the Netherlands; the promoter will be used for getting input from international organisations. We expect a minimum of twelve organisations to be involved in the project. To ensure qualitative input, a trajectory of six months will be used.

Describe how your project will benefit Creative Commons' mission to increase the amount of creativity (cultural, educational, and scientific content) in "the commons".

Getting other people and organisations introduced in new, different business models within the cultural scene. In this case, it specifically is an open source business model licensed through Creative Commons. This way, a new target group will be introduced to the ethics of Creative Commons and will hopefully implement these licenses in their own works.

Describe what technologies and tools your project will use. What kinds of technical skills and expertise do you bring to the project? What are your technical needs?

The only technology being used is Wetpaint, a website to build an online community. This technology is free, making is easier for other to use it as well.

What challenges do you expect to face, and how do you plan to overcome them?

Some scepticism on working with open source might be expected, because for a lot of people and organisations, this still is a very new working method. The positive effects that we experienced already (easier internal communications as well as external communications, efficiency, more involvement from community, knowledge accumulation, openness, goodwill, out of the box thinking) are ways to take some of the scepsis away.

How do you plan to sustain your project after the Creative Commons funding has ended? Detail specific plans. How do you plan to raise revenue to continue your efforts in the future?

After the funding trajectory, the point mentioned above will be completed. This will have resulted in gained knowledge for the Social Festival Model and other organisations that have implemented it. We will of course continue to work with it, and search for new ways to further innovate this platform.

How can this project be scalable, or have a scalable impact?

By marking it to a national territory (our own network) and internationally (by making use of an international promoter).

What resources and support do you expect Creative Commons to provide to your project to ensure its success (if any)?

Describe how your organization currently communicates with its community members and network partners. (100 words)

Incubate is a community on independent culture. We communicate with our community during throughout the entire year, instead of only during the festivalweek. We mostly communicate via social media. This results in a very dynamic working method of organising a festival. We've build up a very involved community, which organises the festival together with us. They deliver us input on marketing and on generating ideas for projects at our festival.
