* Description: What are our goals, as members of the international CC affiliates network, when attending local conferences, meetings with stakeholders or giving presentations in various forums? Is it to promote the actual use of CC licenses? To promote free/open culture? To educate the public about copyright law? Are we trying to advocate abstract values or practical tools? Should we take an ideological standpoint or a pragmatic approach? This panel will provide different viewpoints and discussion from CC teams around the world.
* Description: At a recent #Sensored meetup in San Francisco, several sensor makers (Fitbit, Basis, Misfit Wearables) agreed that there is arguably a socially relevant scientific value to the data they collect from the users of their products. They all, however, expressed concerns regarding the lack of business models around sharing such data. These folks are putting together a document with ideas on how their data could be shared yet monetized. As sensors become ubiquitous, we will have more examples of private companies collecting data from private individuals and providing them free services in return, but also trying to figure out ways to monetize those data. However, those data are also a potential treasure trove for scientific research such as health and behavioral studies that could come out of health sensors data, or transportation policy and innovations from studying how and where we move. But, how do we convince these sensor makers to release the data without jeopardizing their own revenue streams? We can’t tell scientists and repository creators/managers that their content should be free and open without being able to respond intelligently to their concerns regarding revenue and sustainability.

As one of the early chapters to join the international affiliate network, since the launch on 2005, the CC-Israel team had the opportunity to speak in numerous occasions in front of different types of audiences; from school kids to parliament members, from bloggers to museum curators and from NGOs to collection societies. While, generally speaking, reactions were positive and constructive, sometimes the outcome of such advocacy efforts were not quite as we intended or expected them to be. For instance, when promoting Creative Commons licenses in a bloggers meetup, are we supporting open content or are we over-educating about copyright? Will a presentation for school children advance open education efforts or strengthen the scary campaigns of the BSA? Should we address content producers and content consumers with uniform themes or with specifically tailored notions? Our presentation will begin with examples of different Israeli “case-studies” and the lessons learned during 8 years of advocating Creative Commons in Israel. We will then present our idea of a differential approach, promoting different, specific aspects of the project vis-a-vis different types of audiences. Sharing and discussing past experiences and future strategy among affiliates, old and new, will hopefully help improving the effectiveness of local and global advocacy efforts.

* Description: It has been 7 years since the first CC collecting society pilot launched with Buma/Stemra (Holland), implementing a project where members could use Non Commercial CC licenses, and BUMA could collect royalties for all other uses outside the scope of those licences. In 2013, Buma/Stemra the pilot concluded and the society has now made the ability of its members to use the NC licenses a permanent option for its members. There are other pilots in Europe and an increasing interest in Latin America where Creative Commons is working with at least 3 new possible pilots. It is an excellent opportunity to review the pilots to date and consider their future role. Importantly, the European Union is debating a new directive (law) on collective management of rights.  As part of that debate, the ability of members to use open content licenses is currently being discussed.  Those discussions have netted various policy proposals, such as the right to use Creative Commons NC licenses, or allow members to withdraw works from collective management altogether. This discussion has the potential to solve the issue in the European context.

=== Correctly licensing and marking data ===

* Session type: Workshop

* Leads: Sarah H Pearson and Puneet Q Kishor

* Location:

* Time: 10:00 - 11:00

* Description: One of the biggest motivations for versioning the licenses was to address sui generis database rights (SGDR). As the soon-to-be-released CC 4.0 license addresses SGDR, we will look at enabling adoption and helping users of CC-licensed databases understand what they can and cannot do with the data. This session will explore the practical application of Version 4.0 licenses to databases by examining the use cases and discussing potential obstacles and opportunities for CC licensing in this context including:

1. How do licensees deal with massive attribution stacking issues when compiling data from hundreds of sources?

2. What unusual marking issues will licensors face when applying CC licenses to data and databases?

Creative Commons and Collecting Societies pilots for the music sector

  • Session type: Panel
  • Leads: Diane Peters, Paul Keller, Claudio Ruiz, Carolina Botero
  • Location:
  • Time: 15:30 - 16:30
  • Description: It has been 7 years since the first CC collecting society pilot launched with Buma/Stemra (Holland), implementing a project where members could use Non Commercial CC licenses, and BUMA could collect royalties for all other uses outside the scope of those licences.
