Overview

OpenStreetMap is a user-generated map of the world, amassing geodata collaboratively from around the globe. It is aimed at creating and providing free geographic data such as street maps to anyone who wants them. The project was started because most maps that appear free actually have legal or technical restrictions on their use, preventing creative, productive or unexpected uses. In contrast, all data on OpenStreetMap is available for free reuse under CC Attribution-ShareAlike.

After the earthquake in Haiti, OpenStreetMap found an immediate niche to fill, launching their Project Haiti page in an effort to map out what was, at the time, a largely incomplete geographical picture, helping those on the ground in Haiti get to where they needed to be with greater accuracy.

License Usage

OpenStreetMap's dataset is available under CC Attribution-ShareAlike.

In June 2011, OpenStreetMap announced plans to move from the CC BY-SA license to the Open Database License.
