Creative Commons Salon Mountain View: What Does it Mean to Be Open in a Data-Driven World?

Watch the video from this event on Blip.tv.

Our next salon will be held at LinkedIn Headquarters in Mountain View and will feature speakers from LinkedIn, 3taps, and Internet Archive to discuss the increasingly important topic of data as it relates to sharing, privacy, and innovation in the 21st century. Our speakers will each spend a few minutes sharing their personal work and experience with online data, and we will then transition into a panel discussion moderated by Tim O'Reilly, founder of O'Reilly Media, to further explore the topic.

CC Salons are informal events that bring people together around 21st century issues such as digital copyright, creativity, and sharing online. We typically have an audience of 30-50 professionals from many different disciplines, and the theme varies from education to science to media, and more.

Our speakers for the evening include:

Peter Brantley is the Director of the BookServer Project at the Internet Archive, a San Francisco-based not for profit library. He writes widely on the transformations in libraries and publishing, and most recently hosted the Books in Browsers conference in San Francisco. Peter has significant experience with academic research libraries and digital library development programs, and was previously the Executive Director of the Digital Library Federation. He is also the co-founder of the Open Book Alliance.

Karen Gifford leads the business development efforts at 3taps, a platform for exchanges of all kinds. 3taps searches in real time for postings – transaction-specific information about items offered for exchange, such as a job offer or a watch for sale – across a universe that includes the Internet and Twitter. Prior to joining 3taps, Karen worked as a Senior Director at Promontory Financial Group and as Counsel and Officer at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

DJ Patil, Chief Scientist and leader for Analytics and Data Teams at the LinkedIn Corporation. He is responsible for all analytics projects including reporting, web analytics, as well as products on the site that leverage LinkedIn’s unique data set. Some of these products include, People You May Know, Who’s Viewed My Profile, Talent Match, and the other recommendation engines.

Tim O'Reilly (moderator) is the founder and CEO of O'Reilly Media, Inc., thought by many to be the best computer book publisher in the world. Tim is a catalyst for change, identifying and evangelizing the knowledge of "alpha geeks" and technology trends before they hit the mainstream through his books, speaking engagements, and blog, the O'Reilly Radar. Known for popularizing the terms "open source" and "Web 2.0," Tim is an activist for open standards and sensible intellectual property laws. In addition to being a visionary, Tim is an entrepreneur: he created Safari Books Online, the first web-native service for online book content, and O'Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, which funds disruptors, innovators, and hackers of the status quo.

The Promises and Pitfalls of Personalized Medicine

The sequencing of the human genome 10 years ago brought us into a new era in life sciences. The genomic era brings with it tremendous insight into human health and also what the lead scientist on the project, Francis Collins, calls "the radical ethic of immediate data deposit" because the human genome data was shared and easily accessible to all. What promises does this new era hold? What steps must be taken to ensure that the ethic of sharing and remixing data is maintained? How do we increase the odds that the shared data we do have translates into products that save lives? What does privacy look like when an individual's DNA is the basis for a personalized health approach and for medical research? Join us as we tackle these timely and often controversial questions and more at the next CC Salon.

Our panelists for the evening include:

Linda Avey, Founder and President of Brainstorm Research Foundation, a ‘Research 2.0’ initiative focused on developing virtual, consumer-centric models for measuring and tracking cognitive health. In 2006 Ms. Avey co-founded 23andMe, Inc., a personal genetics company enabling consumer access to customized, web-based health and ancestry information based on individual DNA profiling.

Thomas Goetz, executive editor of WIRED Magazine (nominated for 18 National Magazine Awards, has won nine times), and author of the new book The Decision Tree: Taking Control of Your Health in the New Era of Personalized Medicine. Former FDA commissioner Dr. David Kessler calls the book "a game changer," and Dr. Dean Ornish says that Goetz “writes more clearly and presciently about the future of healthcare than anyone on the planet.”

John Wilbanks, Creative Commons' Vice President of Science. He came to Creative Commons from a Fellowship at the World Wide Web Consortium in Semantic Web for Life Sciences. Prior to working at CC, he founded and led to acquisition Incellico, a bioinformatics company that built semantic graph networks for use in pharmaceutical research & development, and was also the first Assistant Director at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School.

The Creative Commons has been well-articulated online, but what does it look like in the physical world? Join creative professionals from SFMOMA, the Oakland Museum, and beyond for an interactive salon on the growth of user participation and sharing in museums and cultural institutions. This event will include a workshop component where you can experiment with redesigning an art exhibition for more social, collaborative engagement.

Our panelists for the evening include:

Jake Barton, founder of Local Projects, a media design firm for physical space whose projects include the 9/11 Memorial Museum, the Official NYC Information Center and StoryCorps

Anne Bast, Intellectual Property Associate for San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. She received her MSI from the University of Michigan School of Information and, before moving to the Bay Area last summer, spent 18 months studying and working in cultural heritage institutions in France.

Kathleen Mclean, principal of Independent Exhibitions, a museum consulting firm specializing in exhibition development, design, programming, and strategic planning. In 2006, she was selected for the American Association of Museums’ Centennial Honor Role, as one of 100 museum professionals to have made a significant contribution to American museums over the last 100 years.

Nina Simon, principal of Museum 2.0, a design firm that creates participatory, dynamic, audience-centered exhibitions and learning spaces. She is the author of The Participatory Museum (2010) and has been named a "museum visionary" by Smithsonian Magazine.

Hope to see you there!

At Creative Commons, we love to share.

And while CC is primarily known for its work enabling openness and collaboration in the digital world, we're interested in how the culture of sharing is changing offline life as well. Join us at the next CC Salon in San Francisco, where we'll present three projects focused on how sharing ideas, knowledge, and even physical space can revolutionize the way people create, work, and play.

The evening's presenters are Jack Herrick, founder of the collaborative how-to manual wikiHow; Clément Alteresco and Anne Gomez of innovation/strategic development agency faberNovel, which founded collaborative workspace pariSoma; and Neal Gorenflo, founder of Shareable, a new magazine and online community dedicated to sharing.

You'll even have the chance to walk away with one of our cheerful new green I Love to Share shirts, which we'll be selling at the salon.

Hope to see you there!

The power of Open Education

Presentations from 7:15-8pm:

Panel discussion from 8:15-9pm:

The Internet and digital technologies have transformed how people learn. Educational resources are no longer static and scarce, but adaptable and widely available, allowing educational institutions, teachers, and learners to actively participate in a global exchange of knowledge via Open Educational Resources (OER). We're gathering together preeminent individuals involved in shaping the future of education and harnessing the power of the internet and digital technologies as forces for good in this field. There will be a presentation period, followed by an informal panel/discussion where we'll explore more in depth the issues, challenges, and opportunities emerging in the field of education.

This is a great chance to meet CC staff, learn more about Creative Commons, and connect with Bay Area creators and innovators. Hope to see you there!

Check out the video from the Salon, thanks to VidSF!

Panel discussion about CC from an international perspective, featuring:

  • CC CEO Joichi Ito
  • CC Arab World Media & Development Manager Donatella della Ratta
  • International Project Manager Michelle Thorne
  • David Sasaki, Outreach Director for Global Voices.

This will be a great chance to learn about how globally diverse communities use Creative Commons, as well as challenges faced in various regions and projects around the world. How do sharing norms, for example, or compelling use cases differ from country to country? What works in one context may not carry over to another, so where do models fail and what lessons can be learned? How can specific fields, such as open education or citizen journalism, solve some of these issues and foster healthier sharing communities?
