  • Creative Commons, KALW, and Chicago Public Radio’s Sound Opinions are pleased to present author Greg Kot in conversation with music journalist David Downs. Kot's new book, "Ripped: How the Wired Generation Revolutionized Music," explores the changing face of the music industry. Downs and Kot will discuss the book, as well as how digital sharing and participatory culture are shaping how music is created and consumed. Audience questions and discussion will follow the conversation.

Theme

  • The digital intersection of art, history, and culture, and how CC can play a defining role in enriching all three.

Presenters

  • Francesco Spagnolo, Director of Research and Collections at the Magnes Museum. Francesco will explore the sharing and marketing of cultural heritage through the lenses of the Magnes' “Digital Narratives,” a project that seeks an alignment between a narrative approach to history, a collaborative practice in the interpretation of cultural history, and the uses of technology and online social media.
  • Dave Toole, CEO and Founder, Outhink Media, will present on how storytelling bridges the cultural and business arenas, outlining the challenges posed by the new social media and the crucial role played by research in information technology.
  • Nancy Van House, Professor, UC Berkeley School of Information, will respond to the other presenters by reflecting on the way in which academia is looking at social media and personal/historical digital archiving, exploring the human interactions that populate the online world.

  • For February's salon, we're thrilled to have the entire CC staff under one roof, coming from as far as Japan, Boston, and Berlin, to speak about what they've been up to internationally and in the realms of science, culture, and education. Whether you've been a fan of CC from the start or you're new to the world of free culture, this salon is not to be missed. Light refreshments will be served and donations for CC will be taken at the door.

  • CC and Citizen Media: Our presenters this month will showcase their innovative projects in citizen journalism and explore how CC helps to facilitate the sharing of information in a journalistic realm.

Presenters

  • David Cohn, veteran citizen journalist and founder of Spot.us, a Bay Area community-funded journalism start-up, a project of the Center for Media Change and funded by the Knight Foundation.
  • Cary Bass, Volunteer Coordinator for Wikinews, and Jon Davis, a "Wikinewsie" volunteer. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

  • Jolene Pinder, an Associate Producer at Arts Engine, Inc. in NYC. Jolene will be screening a short CC-licensed film and talking about the various ways in which Arts Engine uses CC licenses.
  • Eric Steuer, CC's Creative Director, will be talking about the soon to be launched film maker's toolkit.
  • Robin Sloan, Product Strategist from Current TV will wrap up the evening.
