The First Johannesburg CC Salon will be held on Thursday 31 August , 2006

Who

People from Johannesburg who are interested in Creative Commons, copyright, Free Culture, Open Source, Art, Media, and Music, and who would like to get to know people with the same interests...

What

A local informal gathering of individuals around Creative Commons licenses, standards, and technology.

Theme

Remix Nation

Remix. Sample. Mash up. Reconstruct. Reformulate. Remake. Reproduce. Reshuffle. Transform. Recreate. Modify. Reassemble. Revamp. Rejuvenate.

The words that make the corporate copyright protectors and culture busters shudder, and the members of the ‘Culture Commons’ grin with glee. We are part of this commons space of cultural information, made available to us to remix, recreate and share. Let us take the past to reconstruct, remake and transform. Rejuvenate history and make it our cultural own.

Let us strive to achieve what our visionary South African leaders held true in 1955, that the Freedom Charter states as an ideal:

“The Doors of Learning and Culture Shall be opened! … All the cultural treasures of mankind shall be open to all, by free exchange of books, ideas and contact with other lands. ”
