Description

The Creative Commons community in Egypt is a group of volunteers who are very passionate about promoting a culture of copyrights-respect, sharing and collaboration through the use of the Creative Commons licenses on different community-levels.

Vision

   * Why is Creative Commons important for your jurisdiction?

In Egypt, copyrights are being infringed most of the time. So one of the very first steps to overcome this i

   * What do you think makes a successful jurisdiction project?
   * How do you see your jurisdiction project contributing to the global CC Network?

Community

   * Describe the communities that are currently active in the project.

- The A2K (Access To Knowledge) project initiated by Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA)

o How will you continue to engage with these communities?

- We (Hala and myself) are in the process of discussing future possibilities to expand the BA A2K activities to include Cairo (as most of the activities are taking place in Alexandria)

   * Describe the communities you are targeting during this timeframe.

- Artists: including... film-makers, musicians, visual artists, writers.

- Education: educators and educational institutions (formal/informal), edutainment agencies

- Young People: school/university students and young artists

- Research: researchers and research institutions

- Publishers... online and offline/print

o How do you plan to engage with these communities?

- Inviting them to our CC salons, get them enrolled in workshops around copyrights/A2K/how to use CC licenses, answer all their questions and concerns, introducing them to other structures that is using CC licenses for publishing their work...

Priority Goals

  * What are the three most important focus-areas on which your team will be working on during this time frame? Please consider both community building and adoption goals. If you intend to bid for hosting of the CC Global Meeting 2011, please include the bid process as one of your Priority Goals.

1. Focus-area:

   * Fostering a culture of Copyrights-Respect.
o Key issue to resolve and why it's important:
o Which communities will benefit from resolving this issue?

2. Focus-area:

  • Spread an Open-Source-Culture...

based on sharing, collaboration and open access and why Creative Commons is being an essential tool for sharing and collaboration

o Key issue to resolve and why it's important:

o Which communities will benefit from resolving this issue?

3. Focus-area:

  • Help our target groups (Artists, Educators, OnLine Publishers, Researchers, Young People... ) adopting the use of the Creative Commons licenses on different levels... content resources, publishing their work, building on the work of others.
o Key issue to resolve and why it's important:
o Which communities will benefit from resolving this issue?

Deliverables

  * Detail tangible project outputs (e.g., events, papers, blog posts, video/film, etc.) for each priority with expected date of delivery. See also Timeline.

The outputs we plan to deliver are as follows:

- CC Egypt Website to help keeping everyone updated with news about the CC Egypt community, activities... (November 2010)

- Facebook Group Facebook is becoming a very essential tool to get everyone involved... getting feedback, sharing news, announcements and updates around CC Egypt (November 2010)

- Organizing an event to introduce Creative Commons officially to the our target groups (and everyone) in Egypt... as the CC Iftar Cairo wasn’t a good opportunity to introduce CC to people in Egypt (December 2010)

- A frequent Newsletter (monthly/bi-weekly) to keep everyone updated with the latest concerning the activities and projects of the CC Egypt community (January 2011)

- CC Salon Egypt not yet sure about how frequent it’s gonna be but we hope it’s gonna be organized on monthly basis . Every salon will start with a brief Introduction to what Creative Commons is (in case there are new comers) . At a more advanced stage the salons will have themes... the use of CC licenses in arts, education, research... . A presentation of some case studies (whenever possible) . Showcase some resources for CC licensed content . A workshop around Copyrights/CC licenses . An Open Multimedia Jam (explained later on in details)

(first salon... January 2011 - hopefully)

Metrics

Please consider using trackable statistics (such as web traffic or number of license adoptions) when applicable.

- Feedback from the CC Egypt community members (during events or online) - Regular (on-going) evaluation of the CC Egypt activities (from the organizing team) - The number of structures that has adopted the use of the CC licenses with their work.

Resources Required

  • What human resources or expertise must your team seek out in order to achieve your priority goals?

o How will you involve these people?

- Giving talks and running Q&A sessions with the public

- Mailing-list/frequent newsletter (with updates and announcements)

- Facebook Group (or may be a discussion board for those who don’t use FB)

o How will you obtain these technology resources?

- The CC Egypt website... might be hosted on the CC server(s) with a sub-domain like... http://egypt.creativecommons.org ?!

- The Mailing-list functionality can be available through the website as well!! (with a simple add-on)

- FB group (through FB of course!!) =)

Materials

- Space to host CC Salons and/or workshops around CC and copyrights

- Equipment (Projector, Sound System, Sound-mixer and Video-mixer for the Open-Multimedia-Jams)

- Posters (publicity for the salons and workshops)

o How will you obtain these material resources?

- Space and equipment (Hopefully) Through in-kind donations from some cultural institutions and Not-for-Profit organizations in Egypt!!

- Posters and printed materials... not sure yet about funding!!

(but it’ll only cost around 15 USD/20-25 A3 copies per event)

Other

  • What other resources must your team seek out in order to achieve your priority goals?

- Nothing till the very moment! :)

o How will you obtain these other resources?

Sustainability and Scalability

  • How will you ensure your goals will be completed if unforeseen circumstances interrupt your project, such as changes in the leadership of your project or deliverables taking longer to complete than anticipated?

- ...

  • How will you communicate your project's on-going progress and setbacks within your jurisdiction and the CC Network? (e.g. email list updates, meetings, press releases)

- Mailing-list updates (with archives)... sounds more practical! also press-releases sound nice :)

  • How will you document your project so that others can replicate or learn from your efforts?

- Through the website of CC Egypt we will make available (brief, yet informative) how-to guides on how to organize a workshop around copyrights and the use of the CC licenses.

- Video documentation will be used (whenever possible) to make available some of the presentations and Q&A sessions.

Collaboration

  • Please have a look at other roadmaps.

- Unfortunately, didn’t manage to check the other Roadmaps from the Arab world! but hope to do so before our regional meeting

o How could your jurisdiction's plans help drive or support other jurisdictions' activities?

o What are other jurisdictions doing that can support or contribute to your project?

   * Would you be interested in mentoring new jurisdiction teams?

  • Conversely, would you be interested in having a mentor from a long-established jurisdiction team?

- Sure, why not?!  ;)

Regional

  • Suggest three possible projects with which you can collaborate with other teams on a regional level. If you are not yet involved with your regional network, please contact your regional spokesperson or notify CC HQ to put you in touch.

- A program of workshops (preferably focused on young people) to spread a culture of respecting copyrights and how to share and collaborate with the use of Creative Commons licenses.

- A yearly/half-yearly Art festival with artists from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria...

- Distant Open-Multimedia-Jams - still need to test the possibilities of sharing distant online-streams?!  :)

o How do you plan to contribute to these projects?

- The CC Egypt community can help planning, organizing and hosting the suggested activities!

Translation

   * In what languages will you promote CC in your jurisdiction and why?

- Arabic will be the main language used by CC Egypt., because Arabic is the official language used in Egypt.

  • How will you involve the local language(s) community?

- ...?!

Misc.

* Any additional comments?
