Open A.I.R. Public Conference

The historic and scenic city of Cape Town, South Africa, will host the Open A.I.R. Public Conference in December 2013.

Themes:

The Conference, during the week of 9-13 December 2013, will look at the roles of IP in inclusive innovation, collaborative creativity and open development in the developing world, with a particular focus on African settings. The University of Cape Town (UCT) Faculty of Law's IP Law and Policy Research Unit, will serve as host of this Conference. The Conference will run concurrently with the 2013 Global Congress and IP and the Public Interest (below).

Partners:

Confirmed Open A.I.R. Conference implementing partners are the Access to Knowledge for Development Center (A2K4D) at The American University in Cairo, the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) in Lagos, the Centre for IP and IT Law (CIPIT) at Strathmore University in Nairobi, the Centre for Law, Technology and Society at the University of Ottawa, and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) (through its initiative entitled "commons@ip – Harnessing the Knowledge Commons for Open Innovation.") Confirmed Conference funding partners are Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

2013 Global Congress on IP and the Public Interest

Concurrent with the Open A.I.R. Conference (see above), and also hosted by the University of Cape Town (UCT) Faculty of Law's IP Law and Policy Research Unit, will be the 2013 edition of the Global Congress on Intellectual Property and the Public Interest. Congress activities are tentatively scheduled throughout the week of 9-13 December 2013, running parallel to the Open A.I.R. Public Conference, allowing delegates to participate in both events.

The first Global Congress, in December 2011, was hosted by the American University's Washington College of Law in Washington, DC. The second Congress, running from 15 to 17 December 2012, is at FGV Law School in Rio de Janeiro.
