NC ND discussion

Proposals to address concerns around NC/ND

1. create a page on http://creativecommons.org/ that describes the definitions to which the BY and BY-SA licenses are aligned; at first glance these are the Definition of Free Cultural Works and the Open Definition

• ACTION ITEM: develop copy for page; design page; determine URL on cc.org

2. revive the “license spectrum” diagram for display on the CC site, probably on http://creativecommons.org/licenses/ where the 6 CC licenses and PD tools are placed along a spectrum of “more open” to “less open”;

• ACTION ITEM: design license spectrum graphic

3. make it explicit on the cc.org website and communications that CC does prefer the more open licenses in many contexts and domains--such as publicly funded scientific research and educational resources--(and why), i.e. that we *do* try to steer people toward the free licenses. In general, take ownership of this where we have not been clear in the past. CC is not neutral, even if we offer choice.

• ACTION ITEM: develop copy for the website so it is communicated in a clear, thoughtful manner, and sensitive to existing NC/ND license adopters

4. bring up on CC-Community list the idea of changing the name of NC to “Commercial Rights Reserved”

• ACTION ITEM: develop background/rationale that frames the issue (Kat); at appropriate time post to CC-Community

5. develop a thoughtful response as to why we have decided to keep NC/ND for the time being, and the reasons behind the action items above

• ACTION ITEM: develop a blog post describing the working group recommendations above, reasons for them, and above all, why CC is keeping the NC/ND conditions in V4.0
