Licensing data and databases under Version 4.0

- Description: This interactive session will explore the practical application of Version 4.0 licenses to data and databases by examining use cases from several perspectives and discussing potential obstacles and opportunities for CC licensing in this context.
Collective societies in America Latina

- Description: We will present the results of an investigation that is underway in the region to see the current status of collecting societies and analyze how they are facing the challenges of the digital environment. With this background we can see that there are options in the region for artists using Creative Commons licenses. The panel will address such topics as: What is the current status of the collective societies in the region? How are they working with the digital environment? What happened to the licenses in this context? (review what happened in Europe, the pilots and the proposed new policy for these entities) What is happening in Latin America in relation to model pilots? Why is it important and what can we do to improve this scenario?

Artistic production and creative industries: the case for music and cinema

- Description: With an analytical view of the changes brought about in the movie industry and the music due to the new technology, this panel seeks to address how the Internet can be an area of freedom of expression in the arts: what lies beyond the "online piracy" and what possibilities we can start exploring thanks to open licensing for film produced in the third world, and for the collaborative creation of music.

Building Toolkits and Learning Resources for the Global Network

- Description: As part of a one-year project designed to support and strengthen the work of CC’s Global Affiliate Network, the CC community is collaboratively developing of a series of toolkits and learning materials to promote the broad understanding and adoption of open policies and practices. This working session will be an opportunity to share progress around the development of templates for the learning materials, allow for interested parties to contribute content and expertise to the working groups within the project, and to map out next steps in the production, translation, and delivery of the toolkits.

Translation hackathon

- Description: The CC Translation Project was launched in the first half of 2013 aiming to support CC's global affiliates by making key CC resources available in multiple languages and to strengthen CC global affiliate network through collaboration. This session will begin with a brief overview of the Google Translation Project including CC Translation Sprint, particularly, which will run through August to October 2013. The session will then move into a short on-site translation sprint event.

Expanding the School of Open: Affiliate showcase and panel discussion for ways forward

- Description: The School of Open is a community of volunteers focused on providing free education opportunities on the meaning, application, and impact of “openness” in the digital age and its benefit to creative endeavors, education, research, and science. Creative Commons affiliates will present their School of Open projects and courses, including the School of Open Kenya Initiative, School of Open in German, Copyright for Educators, Open data for GLAMs, and more. We will hold a panel discussion on lessons learned and how to scale the initiative globally in online, offline, and multilingual settings. What do affiliates want to achieve through the School of Open? What are affiliate priorities around “open” education and awareness building?
Creative Commons and Collecting Societies pilots for the music sector

- Description: It has been 7 years since the first CC collecting society pilot launched with Buma/Stemra (Holland). Since then, other pilots have been developed in Europe and there is an increasing interest in possible pilots in Latin America. Importantly, the European Union is currently debating a new directive (law) on collective management of rights, including the ability of members to use open content licenses. Now is therefore good time to review the pilots to date and their future role, and to look at the policy developments in Europe. We will aso look at the plans for the Creative Commons friendly Collecting Society C3S that is currently being set up in Europe (see: http://c3s.cc/)

Update on the Open Policy Network: Focus on OER

- Description: In 2011-2012, Creative Commons (CC) and other open organizations were contacted by multiple institutions and governments seeking assistance to develop materials and strategies for open policies to make publicly funded resources available under open licenses. CC Affiliates from 35 countries called for a central hub where open policies could be shared and discussed. They were clear: without clearly defined support, open policies are significantly less likely to be introduced and adopted. This session provides an update on the progress of the Open Policy Network and future planning with affiliates, especially for OER policy adoption.

Should we take an ideological standpoint or a pragmatic approach? This panel will provide different viewpoints and discussion from CC teams around the world.
