Vision

Why is Creative Commons important for the jurisdiction? In a country like Guatemala Creative Commons licences have different meanings. They promote the country to other countries by allowing art, science, etc to be distributed easier and faster. Guatemala is a small country but it is rich in culture. And at the same time these kind of licences allow Guatemalans to have access to information that in other way we would have never have access to, such as Open Source Education Programs.

What do you think makes a successful jurisdiction project? A project that moves you, a project that is global but at the same time is fully connected to the jurisdiction it is from.

How do you see the jurisdiction project contributing to the CC Affiliate Network? Working with other CC Chapters around the World in projects to promote CC licenses.

Community

Describe the communities that are currently active in the project.

During this year we worked with different communities from Guatemala and others from Central America. Some of these are:

- HacksHackers Guatemala

- Free Software Community

- Cyber journalists

- Guatemalan Advocacy Groups and Youth Groups

- Students

How will you continue to engage with these communities?

We will continue organizing activities that involve these communities so that the CC licenses can reach more people each day.

Describe the communities (existing or new) that you plan to focus on during the timeframe covered by this roadmap?

What all these communities have in common is that they use technology to promote what they do, they produce contents, especially multimedia contents, they share contents and they remix contents so by explaining them to use the CC tools, helps them to reach more people.

How do you plan to engage with these communities?

We have relationship with most of them and we will continue organizing activities with them. We plan to organize more CC Salons and Hackathons in the year ahead.

Priority Goals

What are the three most important focus areas on which the Affiliate Team will work during this time period? Please consider community building and adoption goals among your priorities.

1. Focus-area: Open Education

Why is it important? Guatemala has one of the poorest education level in the whole World and it has been proven that OER have a direct impact on the students in their classrooms.

    Which communities will benefit? Students.

2. Focus-area: Open Government

Why is it important? Guatemala is one of the countries with more corruption in the World and Open Government initiatives seek, among other things, transparency in the Government.

Which communities will benefit ? Government, public policy makers, citizens.

3. Focus-area: Culture and spreading the licenses

Why is it important? It is important because one of the goals of CC is to increase the number of works licenced with CC.

Which communities will benefit? Mostly the communities described before.

Project Outputs

Detail tangible project outputs (e.g., events, papers, blog posts, video/films, etc.) for each focus area including an expected date of completion. See also Timeline.

The outputs we plan to complete are as follows:

    Focus-area Open Government

Project Output: Reaching young representatives and junior advisors in the new Congress and explaining them the licenses as a tool to help openness and transparency policies. Also support the new initiatives of Open Government in Guatemala.

Expected start date - Expected date of completion: Reaching the new representatives in February 2012 and the support for new Open Government initiatives is a permanent project.

Team Member(s) Responsible: Jorge Gabriel Jiménez.

How will this output help achieve your goals? It will increase the use of CC licenses in Government web sites.

    Focus-area Open Education

Project Output Opening the repository of thesis in at least one academic institution.

Expected start date January 2012 - Expected date of completion: November 2012.

Team Member(s) Responsible: María Isabel Carrascosa

How will this output help achieve your goals? It will increase the OER for the students. The academic community will be able to use more documents and it will be a first step to have more OER in Guatemala.

Focus-area  Project Output The Power of Open in Guatemala - A compilation of 7 success stories with the use of licenses in Guatemala that will be published in different formats

Expected start date January 2012 - Expected date of completion: Semptember 15

Team Member(s) Responsible: Jorge Gabriel Jiménez, Renata Avila, María Isabel Carrascosa

How will this output help achieve your goals? It will show the success cases of CC Guatemala so it will help to spread the use of licenses for new projects.

Metrics

Please consider using trackable statistics (such as web traffic or number of license adoptions) when applicable, but only if meaningful.

How will you measure and evaluate your impact on focus-area 1? By the number of new Open Government web sites licensed with CC.

How will you measure and evaluate your impact on focus-area 2? By the number of new academic documents licensed with CC.There will be one informative meeting every month and we will publish results on the blog, but the concrete results depend on authorities

How will you measure and evaluate your impact on focus-area 3? The publication and by the number of people that uses the Power of Open Guatemala as a reference, downloads and times the document is shared.

We have the determination to complete the projects listed but in general our timeline will be flexible.

How will you communicate the project's on-going progress and setbacks within the jurisdiction and the CC Affiliate Network? (e.g. email list updates, meetings, press releases) We will publish it in our web site and communicate it by email with the other Latin American CC chapters.

How will you document the project so that others may replicate or learn from your efforts? We will document it as a new post in our web site and later on a Case Study.

Conversely, would you be interested in having a mentor from a more experienced jurisdiction team? Yes, we are interested, especially in the Open Government area.
