XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) facilitates embedding metadata in files using a subset of RDF. Most notably, XMP supports embedding metadata in PDF and many image formats, though it is designed to support nearly any file type.

Creative Commons is recommending XMP as the preferred format for embedded metadata, given its support for numerous file formats and the balkanized state of embedded metadata standards. Others are coming to a similar conclusion; Microsoft has announced support for XMP in Vista applications and Jon Udell notes "There’s also good support in .NET Framework 3.0 for reading and writing XMP metadata." Note that even when embedded with XMP metadata, Creative Commons recommends a licensed document include a visible copyright notice; format-specific recommendations for visible notices are available.

The Creative Commons licensing process offers a XMP template which may be used to mark files within XMP-supporting Adobe applications (step-by-step how-to document). An XMP FileInfo panel is also available.

Specifying License Information
XMP defines a rights management schema (see XMP Specification, p. 42). Creative Commons sets the following properties (example values):

* xmpRights:Marked — False if Public Domain, True otherwise.
* xmpRights:WebStatement — http://example.com/pdf-metadata.html (Replace with URL containing metadata about the XMP-embedded file; this is referred to as the Web Statement.)
* xmpRights:UsageTerms — An optional field describing legal terms of use; Creative Commons recommends that when present this take the form This work is licensed to the public under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license http://creativecommons.org/licenses/bysa/2.0/ verify at http://example.com/pdfmetadata.html (Replace URL following 'verify at' with URL containing metadata about the XMP-embedded file; this is typically the URL specified by xmpRights:WebStatement.)
Note: as of 2011-05 http://www.metadataworkinggroup.org/pdf/mwg_guidance.pdf suggests using dc:rights and xmpRights:WebStatement; it probably makes sense to populate dc:rights and xmpRights:UsageTerms with identical content.

We also define a Creative Commons schema http://creativecommons.org/ns# whose common prefix is cc. It currently has the following properties:

* license — The license URL; for example, http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/.
* morePermissions — A URL where additional permissions (commercial licensing, etc) are available.
* attributionURL — The URL to use when attributing this work.
* attributionName — The creator's preferred name to use when attributing this work.

Verification Links and XMP
A publisher can boost confidence in embedded metadata by providing a verifying web statement. A verifying web statement is a URL which contains metadata with assertions matching those embedded in the file. The difference is that instead of making the assertions about a URL, the assertions are made in reference to the SHA-1 hash of the file.

For example, the example web statement
http://example.com/pdf-metadata.html
would include metadata encoded as RDFa.

The document example.pdf is licensed under a

Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license.

When processing a file containing an embedded web statement, an application can retrieve the statement and parse it for additional metadata. If matching assertions are found which apply to the calculated SHA-1 hash of the file, the application can display an indicator noting increased confidence in the metadata. This approach has the added benefit of taking advantage of an existing mechanism (copyright take-down procedures) in order to break the confidence in the case of inappropriately licensed material.
You are here because you want to use an Adobe application like Photoshop to mark files as re-usable under a Creative Commons license.

Many Adobe applications support embedding XMP metadata in files, including PSD documents, Digital Negative files (DNG), JPEG files and PDF documents. The Creative Commons licensing process offers an XMP template which may be used to mark documents with Creative Commons license information.

A Creative Commons XMP FileInfo panel, accessible from many Adobe applications, is also available.

Note that a licensed PDF document should include a visible copyright notice as described in how to tag works in addition to embedded metadata.

How to tag a single file
Step 1: Choose a license
Click on "choose license" on most pages at creativecommons.org to visit the license selection application.

Step 2: Create an XMP template
In order to mark you work you need an XMP template. You can create this using a text editor. Use the following text, replacing LICENSE_URL, YOUR_NAME and LICENSE_NAME with the appropriate values.

Step 2a (Mac OS X): Save the file to the right folder
Under OS X save the file to

/Users/{YOUR USERNAME}/Library/Application Support/Adobe/XMP/Metadata Templates

where {YOUR USERNAME} is replaced with your OS X short username. You may have to manually create the 'Metadata Templates' directory before saving.

The filename needs to end with .XMP.

Step 2a (Windows): Save the file to the right folder
In Windows XP, the file should go in this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\{YOUR USERNAME}\Application Data\Adobe\XMP\Metadata Templates

In Windows Vista and Windows 7, the file should go in this folder:

C:\Users\{YOUR USERNAME}\Application Data\Adobe\XMP\Metadata Templates

where {YOUR USERNAME} is replaced with your Windows username. The easiest way do this is to save the file to the desktop, and then to:

# Click on the Start Menu
# Click "Run..."
# Type Desktop\..\Application Data
# Click "OK"
# Open the "Adobe" folder inside there
# Open the "XMP" folder inside there, or create it if there is no XMP folder
# Open the "Metadata Templates" folder inside, or create it if there is no folder by that name
# Drag the XMP file you saved to your desktop to the folder that just opened
# Close the folder

You may have to create the "XMP" folder under "Adobe", and you may also have to create the "Metadata Templates" folder under "XMP".

The filename needs to end with .XMP.

Step 3: Mark Document
Within your Adobe application open the metadata panel while editing a file you want to mark (File | File Info in Photoshop for example). Using the fly-out menu in the lower left corner of the panel, choose the template you saved.

In Acrobat 9, go to File | Document Properties and click on the Description tab. From there click an Additional Metadata... and select Advanced in the panel on the left. Click on the fly-out menu in the top left corner and select the template you saved.

Step 4: Save and Publish
Save your file! If publishing on the web the page that links to your XMP-marked document should contain a license notice and metadata, which can be copied from the same licensing process.

Creative Commons XMP Custom FileInfo Panel
Copyright information is displayed in the standard Description panel (see screenshot above). This may be supplemented by the Creative Commons XMP FileInfo panel. This optional panel displays the copyright information available via the Description panel as well as a pointer to this page for help and a License URL, which may differ from the Copyright Info URL (see advanced usage).

This custom XMP FileInfo panel is available for free at http://johnbishopimages.com/tools/

where {YOUR USERNAME} is replaced with your OS X short username.

This custom XMP FileInfo panel is available for free at http://johnbishopimages.com/creativecommons/?xmp

Adobe CS3
You can add a panel to Adobe Photoshop CS3 and other Adobe CS3 based XMP-compliant applications. This panel lets you choose a license from the convenience of the File Info box. Here's how:

On Windows
Just run our setup program:
* Click here to download the CS3 Creative Commons panel setup program.

You may have to restart the application before it notices the new panel.

On Mac
Simply download our installer disk image and run the installer package inside.

More information
You can see:
* How to write your own Adobe custom metadata panel
* A browser showing you the history of our panel in Subversion
Adobe changed the implementation of the XMP FileInfo panels starting with it's CS4 suite. Beginning in CS4 the FileInfo dialog is a Flash based application built using Flash, C++ or Java. Installing the text-based CS3 version above will not work.

MAC and Windows versions now available
CS4, CS5 and CS6 versions of a FileInfo panel for embedding a Creative Commons license metadata is now available from john bishop images.

Support for the application based panels like those found in (for example) Bridge and Premiere Pro will also be included, as well as XMP presets.

These panels run under both MAC or Windows systems.

For example, if a user chose Attribution 3.0 they would replace LICENSE_URL with
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/
, LICENSE_NAME with
Attribution 3.0
and YOUR_NAME with the user's name.

Step 2a (Mac OS X): Save the file to the right folder
Under OS X save the file to

/Users/{YOUR USERNAME}/Library/Application Support/Adobe/XMP/Metadata Templates

where {YOUR USERNAME} is replaced with your OS X short username. You may have to manually create the 'Metadata Templates' directory before saving.

The filename needs to end with .XMP.

Step 2a (Windows): Save the file to the right folder
In Windows XP, the file should go in this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\{YOUR USERNAME}\Application Data\Adobe\XMP\Metadata Templates

In Windows Vista and Windows 7, the file should go in this folder:

C:\Users\{YOUR USERNAME}\Application Data\Adobe\XMP\Metadata Templates

where {YOUR USERNAME} is replaced with your Windows username. The easiest way do this is to save the file to the desktop, and then to:

# Click on the Start Menu
# Click "Run..."
# Type Desktop\..\Application Data
# Click "OK"
# Open the "Adobe" folder inside there
# Open the "XMP" folder inside there, or create it if there is no XMP folder
# Open the "Metadata Templates" folder inside, or create it if there is no folder by that name
# Drag the XMP file you saved to your desktop to the folder that just opened

For example, if a user chose Attribution 3.0 they would replace LICENSE_URL with
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/
, LICENSE_NAME with
Attribution 3.0
and YOUR_NAME with the user's name.

Step 2a (Mac OS X): Save the file to the right folder
Under OS X save the file to

The filename needs to end with .XMP.

Step 2a (Windows): Save the file to the right folder
In Windows XP, the file should go in this folder:

where {YOUR USERNAME} is replaced with your Windows username. The easiest way do this is to save the file to the desktop, and then to:

# Click on the Start Menu
# Click "Run..."
# Type Desktop\..\Application Data
# Click "OK"
# Drag the XMP file you saved to your desktop to the folder that just opened
# Close the folder

You may have to create the "XMP" folder under "Adobe", and you may also have to create the "Metadata Templates" folder under "XMP".

Step 3: Mark Document

For example, if a user chose Attribution 3.0 they would replace LICENSE_URL with
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/
, LICENSE_NAME with
Attribution 3.0
and YOUR_NAME with the user's name.

<?xpacket begin= id=?><x:xmpmeta xmlns:x='adobe:ns:meta/'>
</dc:rights>
</rdf:Description>

<rdf:Description rdf:about=
xmlns:cc='http://creativecommons.org/ns#'>
<cc:license rdf:resource='LICENSE_URL'/>
</rdf:Description>

</rdf:RDF>
</x:xmpmeta><?xpacket end='r'?>

This custom XMP FileInfo panel is available for free ...

Adobe CS4 and CS5
Adobe changed the implementation of the XMP FileInfo panels starting with it's CS4 suite. Beginning in CS4 the FileInfo dialog is a Flash based application built using Flash, C++ or Java. Installing the text-based CS3 version above will not work.

MAC and Windows versions now available
CS4 and CS5 versions of a FileInfo panel for embedding a Creative Commons license metadata is now available from john bishop images.

Support for the application based panels like those found in (for example) Bridge and Premiere Pro will also be included, as well as XMP presets.

These panels run under both MAC or Windows systems.
As a photographer (my web site is just a vehicle for that expression) I have an interested in understanding how embedded meta-data is used to protect creatives and their creations.

This has lead me to examine standards like the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative, the International Press Telecommunications Council, the Picture Licensing Usage System (aka usePLUS) and the Creative Commons as sources of licensing and protection schemes.
Dublin Core and IPTC metadata is exposed in Adobe's Creative Suite programs (most significantly Photoshop and Bridge) as well as Photoshop Lightroom.
Starting with Creative Suite 5, PLUS metadata is also now exposed. Photoshop Lightroom support for PLUS metadata is available via a third party plugin, and until now, Creative Commons metadata was only available for Creative Suite 3 based programs.

After extensive development and testing Creative Commons metadata is now exposed in Creative Suite 4 and 5 programs via a third party custom XMP FileInfo panel available from john bishop images.
I joined the Creative Commons in 2008 and have written extensively about both the Creative Commons, Open Source and Open Directory as well as the GNU/GPL.
Along this creative journey my interest in licensing, copyright, copyleft, and other licensing and protection schemes has grown. As a photographer (my web site is just a vehicle for that expression) I have an interested in understanding how embedded meta-data is used to protect creatives and their creations.

This has lead me to examine standards like the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative, the International Press Telecommunications Council, the Picture Licensing Usage System (aka PLUS) and the Creative Commons as sources of licensing and protection schemes.

Dublin Core and IPTC meta-data is exposed in Adobe's Creative Suite programs (most significantly Photoshop and Bridge) as well as Photoshop Lightroom.

Currently PLUS is only available in Photoshop Lightroom and CC is only available for CS3 based programs.

I have started development of XMP FileInfo dialog Creative Commons panel for CS4 and CS5.

For example, if a user chose Attribution 3.0 they would replace LICENSE_URL with
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/
, LICENSE_NAME with
Attribution 3.0
and YOUR_NAME with the user's name.

Step 2a (Mac OS X): Save the file to the right folder
Under OS X save the file to

/Users/{YOUR USERNAME}/Library/Application Support/Adobe/XMP/Metadata Templates

where {YOUR USERNAME} is replaced with your OS X short username. You may have to manually create the 'Metadata Templates' directory before saving.

The filename needs to end with .XMP.

Step 2a (Windows): Save the file to the right folder
In Windows XP, the file should go in this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\{YOUR USERNAME}\Application Data\Adobe\XMP\Metadata Templates

In Windows Vista and Windows 7, the file should go in this folder:

C:\Users\{YOUR USERNAME}\Application Data\Adobe\XMP\Metadata Templates

where {YOUR USERNAME} is replaced with your Windows username. The easiest way do this is to save the file to the desktop, and then to:

# Click on the Start Menu
# Click "Run..."
# Type Desktop\..\Application Data
# Click "OK"
# Open the "Adobe" folder inside there
# Open the "XMP" folder inside there, or create it if there is no XMP folder
# Open the "Metadata Templates" folder inside, or create it if there is no folder by that name
# Drag the XMP file you saved to your desktop to the folder that just opened

A Creative Commons XMP FileInfo panel, accessible from many Adobe applications, is also available - see below.

For example, if a user chose Attribution 3.0 they would replace LICENSE_URL with
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/
, LICENSE_NAME with
Attribution 3.0
and YOUR_NAME with the user's name.

# Drag the XMP file you saved to your desktop to the folder that just opened
# Close the folder

You may have to create the "XMP" folder under "Adobe", and you may also have to create the "Metadata Templates" folder under "XMP".

You are here because you want to use an Adobe application like Photoshop to mark files as re-usable under a Creative Commons license.

Many Adobe applications support embedding XMP metadata in files, including PSD documents, JPEG files and PDF documents. The Creative Commons licensing process offers an XMP template which may be used to mark documents with Creative Commons license information.

For example, if a user chose Attribution 3.0 they would replace LICENSE_URL with
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/
, LICENSE_NAME with
Attribution 3.0
and YOUR_NAME with the user's name.

<?xpacket begin= id=?><x:xmpmeta xmlns:x='adobe:ns:meta/'>
xmlns:xapRights='http://ns.adobe.com/xap/1.0/rights/'>
<xapRights:Marked>True</xapRights:Marked> </rdf:Description>

<rdf:Description rdf:about=
xmlns:dc='http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/'>
<dc:rights>
<rdf:Alt>
<rdf:li xml:lang='x-default' >Copyright 2009, YOUR_NAME. Licensed to the public under Creative Commons LICENSE_NAME.</rdf:li>
</rdf:Alt>
</dc:rights>
</rdf:Description>

<rdf:Description rdf:about=
xmlns:cc='http://creativecommons.org/ns#'>
<cc:license rdf:resource='LICENSE_URL'/>
</rdf:Description>

</rdf:RDF>
</x:xmpmeta><?xpacket end='r'?>

Step 2a (Mac OS X): Save the file to the right folder
Under OS X save the file to

/Users/{YOUR USERNAME}/Library/Application Support/Adobe/XMP/Metadata Templates

where {YOUR USERNAME} is replaced with your OS X short username. You may have to manually create the 'Metadata Templates' directory before saving.

The filename needs to end with .XMP.

Step 2a (Windows): Save the file to the right folder
In Windows, the file should go in this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\{YOUR USERNAME}\Application Data\Adobe\XMP\Metadata Templates

where {YOUR USERNAME} is replaced with your Windows username.

If publishing on the web the page that links to your XMP-marked document should contain a license notice and metadata, which can be copied from the same licensing process.

the Creative Commons XMP Custom FileInfo Panel
