This page is to remember Atty. Jimmy Soriano and the great contribution made to the Creative Commons community.

Jimmy first joined the CC community in 2005 when he launched our CC Philippines team. Over the past 7 years he has been a constant presence at CC events, a major contributor to discussion and debates, and a particularly influential figure in our Asia-Pacific community. During 2008-09 he served as head of the CC Asia and the Pacific Community, launching its first newsletter and hosting its conference in Manila in 2009. Jimmy's friendliness, patience and wisdom made him a natural leader in our community, taking the role of mentor and adviser to many new affiliates in his region.

In his role both in CC and as Executive Director of the e-Law Center of the Arellano University School of Law, Jimmy was a particularly strong advocate for open education and the need to make knowledge and learning accessible to all. He practiced his own values through his teaching, advocacy and academic work, in which he sought to make the law accessible and understandable to all members of society.

Jimmy passed away in July 2012, after a year of lingering illness. He will be greatly missed by all in the CC community.

Below are memories of Jimmy and messages for his family shared by CC's community.

== Overview ==

Foncept is a Hong Kong-based design sharing community site. Foncept organises fortnightly T-shirt competitions; users are able to vote for their favourite designs on the Foncept website. Designs which are well-received by the public will be selected and printed as T-shirts for sale, with the winning designers receiving a reward and revenue for every T-shirt sold. Foncept’s objective is to help local designers to share and publish their designs to the public, and to increase consumer awareness and understanding of what designers wish to express in their designs.

== License Usage ==

Creative Commons licenses adopted: Attribution-Non-Commercial 3.0 HK, Attribution-Non-Commercial-Share-Alike 3.0 HK, Attribution-Non-Commercial-No-Derivatives 3.0 HK

Designers are free to select Creative Commons licenses when submitting their designs.

== Motivations ==

The team behind Foncept is mostly made up of software developers, who are familiar with free and open-source licensing in the software development context. Foncept first found out about Creative Commons when looking for a similarly free licensing system in the area of creative works.

Foncept sought to encourage designers to share their designs by providing an alternative licensing model, in the hope that it will encourage designers to remix and reuse elements in their designs to create and innovate collaboratively. In discussions of Creative Commons licensing with designers, Foncept found that designers were more willing to make their designs public if they could restrict reuse to non-commercial usage. Foncept therefore made non-commercial CC licenses available to designers on its website.

Foncept initially received a large number of enquiries about why CC licensing was available and what CC licenses meant. However, the availability of CC licensing was praised by local designers, who appreciated the availability of a local platform which respected copyright while also providing a certain level of creative freedom.

== 條款 ==

== Overview ==

"[http://www.inmediahk.net/ Inmediahk.net] is the main citizen media website in Hong Kong, specialising in social issues, current affair commentaries and citizen reportage. It also hosts a number of socially-concerned personal and collective weblogs. Inmediahk.net was launched in the second half of 2004 and has been running as a participatory media in the form the citizen reporting. It adopts media activism in idea and practice, and was actively involved in the counter-mainstream reporting of" a number of important movements.

(Taken from "[http://www.scribd.com/doc/14619469/Hong-Kong-English Info-Rhizome: Report on Independent Media in the Chinese-speaking World]", p.58)

== License Usage ==

All six licences are available for contributors to release their works under. This feature is implemented using the tagging feature onsite. They can just select the appropriate licence tags during the submission process and they will be displayed side-by-side with the works. The downside of this approach is that it is not compatible with RDFa and thus not discoverable by CC search engines. InMediaHK probably needs some technical support on this.

The benefit so far is to make people aware that there can be variations even under the current copyright system. And I think more people will attribute to our website rather than taking the content without attribution.

Also some individual contributors do not have enough knowledge about the licence. For example, some of them would choose both the non-derivative and share alike tags for their translation work -- but translation itself is already a kind of derivative work. It seems that although many people hear about the licence, but they don't know the details. Creative Commons Hong Kong probably needs to do more publicizing work.

== Motivations ==

The editors of InMediaHK heard about Creative Commons before they started the website in 2004, but they only took a serious look into the license in 2005 when the Hong Kong government was trying to pass a digital copyright law that criminalises online copyright violation. We then invited [http://www.inmediahk.net/node/206149 Creative Commons experts from mainland China and Taiwan to present their view about digital copyright in relation to creativity].

As a citizen media website, InMediaHK wants the articles to reach as many people as possible. Creative Commons helps us to distribute our works.
== 條款 ==

== Overview ==

== License Usage ==

== Motivations ==

== Overview ==

== License Usage ==

The benefit so far is to make people aware that there can be variations even under the current copyright system. And I think more people will attribute to our website rather than taking the content without attribution.

== Motivations ==

The management team of InMediaHK heard about Creative Commons before they started the website in 2004, but they only took a serious look into the license in 2005 when the Hong Kong government was trying to pass a digital copyright law that criminalises online copyright violation.
