WHAT:
The etcc exhibition features a body of new works exploring the realities of copyright in the visual arts. The creative community is changing; a culture is emerging allowing artists to appropriate, integrate and remix each others’ work. But coupled with these notions of inspiration and freedom to create are issues of piracy, legal licensing and artistic ownership.

Etcc takes the debate and slams it right on the gallery wall, with each artist creating a work that is both recycled and recyclable. Each work recycles licensed Creative Commons images, and is in turn licensed for others to remix – legally. What results is an interactive process that highlights how most art is derivative in nature, while questioning the ramifications of this on the artistic community.
etcc is
a
series
of
 exhibitions
that
 are
remixed
 and
 remixable
 –
legally.

 In
 2011
 etcc
 will
 host
 three
 consecutive
 exhibitions
 in
 Sydney,
 Brisbane
 and
 Melbourne
 featuring
 a
 body
 of
 new
 works
 that
 explore
 the
 realities
 of
 copyright
 in
 the
 visual
 arts.
 By
hanging
the
 polarized
 copyright
 debate
on
 the
 gallery
wall
 the
 works
 challenge
 piracy,
 appropriation,
 inspiration,
 legal
 licensing
 and
the
 freedom
 to
create.
Each
 artist
 will
 take
 Creative
 Commons
 licensed
 images,
 create
 a
 new
 work
based
on
those
images,
 and
in
turn
 license
 their
image
for
others
to
remix
–
legally.
 Through
this
 process,
 the
 project
 utilizes
 emerging
 copyright
 practices
 to
 demonstrate
 new
 models
 of
 distribution,
 collaboration
 and
 commerce.
 Appropriation.
 Rip
 offs.
 Sharing.
 Remix.
 Collaboration.
 Piracy.
Due
credit.
 The
 environment
that
 artists
 operate
 in
 now
 is
 both
 liberating
 and
 litigious.
 The
 copyright
 debate
 is
 drab
 and
 polarised,
 and
 of
 little
 relevance
 to
 many
 artists’
 creative
 practice.
 However,
 this
 does
 not
 mean
 that
 it
 does
 not
 exist,
 for
 better
 or
 for
 worse,
 in
 the
 creative
 world.

 The
 creative
 community
 is
 changing.
 Technology
 is
 changing.
 The
 ways
 artists
 can
 control
 their
 respective
 rights
 are
changing
too.
 A
 culture
is
emerging
 to
 allow
artists
to
shift,
integrate
 and
 remix
 each
others’
 work;
 resulting
 in
the
formation
of
 something
fresh
and
unrestrained
from
 the
 chains
of
traditional
legal
 regulations.
 Many
 musicians,
 filmmakers
 and
 digital
 artists
 have
 embraced
 this
 concept
 however
 remix
 is
 far
 from
 an
 established
 visual
 arts
 practice.

etcc
 invites
 artists
 to
 look
 at
 ways
 to
 legally
 reuse
 work
 and
 encourages
 the
 creative
 community
 to
 better
 understand
both
their
inherent
rights
 and
potential
alternatives
to
 the
 blanket
of
 “all
rights
reserved”
copyright
 law.
 The
 audience
 is
 also
 asked
 to
 appreciate
 the
 artistic
 process
 where
 one
 creation
 is
 transformed
 into
 something
 entirely
 new
 whether
 obviously
 or
 conceptually;
 all
 playing
 with
 the
 notion
 that
 most
 works
 are
 derivative
 in
nature.

 The etcc exhibition
 will
 showcase
 a
 broad
range
of
 works
 from
 a
varied
 selection
 of
artists
 including
 Beastman,
 Numskull,
 Phibs,
Ben
Frost,
 MiniGraff,
 Benjamin
Reeve,
 Rena
Littleson,
 Maricor
Maricar,
 and
 many
more
 to
be
 announced.

== Overview ==

''[http://www.discovermagazine.com Discover]'' is a highly regarded popular science magazine that has been publishing since 1980. Along side republished content from the print editions, the ''Discover'' website publishes an images and video gallery, a podcast series and a [http://blogs.discovermagazine.com blog portal] that includes 10 science-focused blogs.

80beats is one of ''Discover''’s blogs. Written by Andrew Moseman and Smriti Rao and edited by Eliza Strickland, the blog posts ‘journalistic mashups’, synthesising science news from a range of sources into short, punchy entries. The authors indicate a direct quote from other sources with blue text and linking to the source in square brackets after the quote.

80beats is available on the ''Discover'' website, is syndicated via RSS and is circulated as a daily email newsletter.

== License Usage ==

Entries on 80beats are published under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 Unported licence. The content does not become available on the CC licence terms until 30 days after it was published have passed. During this period Discover asserts full copyright over the entries. Notice of this licensing arrangement is made in the left column of the blog. The notice also specifies that the images on 80beats are not the property of Discover and are therefore not under the licence.

== Motivations ==

Because 80beats draws so heavily on other literature in the science field, the authors wanted to explicitly add their new content back into the body of commentary of a given topic. As the licence notice states, “As 80beats makes fair use of the work of many excellent publications, we think it's only proper to offer up our content for use by others.”
80Beats was encouraged to release its material under a Creative Commons licence because they make use of the work of many other excellent publications in putting together the blog and so believe it is only proper to offer up their content in turn for use by others. A Creative Commons Share Alike licence will also help to fulfil Discover Magazine’s aim of encouraging an interest in science by allowing people to use material on the blog and share it with friends. The use of a CC licence demonstrates the importance of people having access to, as well as an interest in, the rapidly developing world of science.
