Ethical Public Domain: Debate of Questionable Practices - this is the title for the Second COMMUNIA workshop to be held in Vilnius, Lithuania on Monday 31 March 2008 from 8:30 to 18.

The morning session will be held at ELTA press center, with registration and introductions from 8:30 to 10:00, followed by ten rounds of debates from 10:00 to 15:00 (about half-an-hour each). At 15:00 there will be a press conference to share the results with the media and the public.

The afternoon session will take place at the Neringa Restaurant, Gedimino 23. A discussion of ethical and legal frameworks for a vibrant Public Domain will be followed by dinner and an evening of creative works.

Open Source Day is a full-day event that will be held in ''Jordan University of Science and Technology''. The event aims to spread the culture of Open Source, and to shed light on other movements that follow the same principles. The organizers of the event wish that the event will draw more attention towards the ethical dimensions behind OSI and FSF and to clear previous misconceptions about these two movements.

One of the day's key speakers is Mr. Ziad Maraqa, Legal Cases and Court Decisions Manager at ''Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP)'', who will give a lecture about Creative Commons Licenses in Jordan and their compliance with the actual Jordanian intellectual property laws.

The COMMUNIA Thematic Network aims at becoming a European point of reference for theoretical analysis and strategic policy discussion of existing and emerging issues concerning the public domain in the digital environment - as well as related topics, including, but not limited to, alternative forms of licensing for creative material; open access to scientific publications and research results; management of works whose authors are unknown (i.e. orphan works).

Funded by the European Commission within the eContentplus framework, the 3-years long project expects to provide policy guidelines that will help each stakeholder involved - public and private, from the local to the European and global level.

COMMUNIA also plans to build strategic relationships with other non-European countries (starting with the United States and Brazil, where two COMMUNIA members are located) in which similar policy discussions are currently underway.

The conference will address several issues. First it wants to examine why we should look for alternatives at all. To do that, it identifies problems not only just in the entrepreneurial model, but also in the ‘old’ or traditional model it replaces. Second it then wants to look for new ways of organizing, practicing and conceptualizing university life. It will look for alternatives in different directions: new practices inside the university as well as practices outside the institution and practices at the borders, which may inspire university institutions.

The way we create and disseminate knowledge has undergone profound change over the last ten years. The capacity of ICT and the rise of a rich text, highly interactive, user generated and socially active Internet (Web 2.0) has seen linear models of knowledge production giving way to more diffuse open ended and serendipitous knowledge processes.

As a response we have seen a worldwide move towards establishing frameworks in which we can optimise access to and reuse of research especially that which is publicly funded. This has been supported by the development of open access repositories, new publishing tools and models and more strategic management of copyright at the individual and institutional level.

QUT along with many other institutions throughout the world has been a pioneer in putting in place the management practices and necessary infrastructure to promote access and innovation. We are proud to announce what we believe will be a truly landmark conference that will draw on experts from Australia and around the world speak on a range of topics such as evolving publishing models, repository management, e-Research, policy development, and legal and technical issues.

Since 1998 we've seen the emergence of incredible collections of open content like Wikipedia, open course materials like MIT OCW, open e-learning like Carnegie Mellon's Open Learning Initiative, open record labels like Magnatune, open access journals like the Public Library of Science, and the list goes on. Since 2002 we have referred to open content designed to support learning as "open educational resources."

While many open educational resources projects and other open content projects are incredibly successful, not all of them are sustainable. The first question of the open educational resources movement will always be "are we supporting meaningful learning?" But the second question must be "do we have a sustainable model for continuing to support learning?" At this 10th anniversary conference we will explore these foundational themes of the open educational resources field.

The conference will address several issues. First it wants to examine why we should look for alternatives at all. To do that, it identifies problems not only just in the entrepreneurial model, but also in the ‘old’ or traditional model it replaces. The way we create and disseminate knowledge has undergone profound change over the last ten years. The capacity of ICT and the rise of a rich text, highly interactive, user generated and socially active Internet (Web 2.0) has seen linear models of knowledge production giving way to more diffuse open ended and serendipitous knowledge processes.

As a response we have seen a worldwide move towards establishing frameworks in which we can optimise access to and reuse of research especially that which is publicly funded. This has been supported by the development of open access repositories, new publishing tools and models and more strategic management of copyright at the individual and institutional level.

Understanding how URLs work in ccHost is a very important concept that you should understand before doing anything else.

== URL Parts ==

ccHost URLs are composed of four main parts:

1. Root URL of installation
* This is the URL address of where index.php lives. For example: http://example.com, or http://example.com/cchost

2. Virtual Root
* Don't worry if you don't know what a 'ccHost virtual root' is, we'll get to it here but for now assume it's the word media.

3. Command
* This part of the URL maps to an internal command in ccHost. This can be anything from a request for a submit form, a feed, a record listing, etc. Examples are people which shows a listing of the latest registered users who have uploaded or files which lists the latest uploads.

4. Parameters
* Many if not most commands accept and even require parameters. For example, adding a specific user's name to the people command will display the user's main page, e.g. people/rejon

Log in as an administrator and navigate to "Global Settings." Each filetype which is desired to be blocked should be set to "(D)isabled." The "(S)ignature" and "(V)erify" options allow uploads with either a simple check of signature or full file verification using getID3, respectively.

==How do I restrict licenses?==
Log in as an administrator and go to the "Manage Site" section. If running multiple sites make sure you select the site you want to edit from the dropdown menu on top. Click on the "License" link. On that page you can select which supported licenses the users are able to assign to their work. When you are satisfied click on "Submit."

Log in as an administrator and go to the "Manage Site" section. If running multiple sites make sure you select the site you want to edit from the dropdown menu on top. Click on the "Settings" link. On that page you can add more registered usernames to the list of Admins. Simply separate them by a comma and space, eg: admin, fourstones, rejon, greg

==How do I edit the navigation tabs at the top of the page?==
Log in as an administrator and go to the "Manage Site" section. If running multiple sites make sure you select the site you want to edit from the dropdown menu on top. Click on the "Navigator Tab Sets" link. Click on the "[Edit tabs]" link for the associated tab set you want to edit.

To create a new tab click on "Add Tab." Give it a name (internal only), Display Name (what is displayed), Help Hint ("tooltip" when hovering over with mouse pointer), define its action, and set access level.

On that page you are also able to remove unwanted tabs and edit what all of the current tabs' functions are.
