|Answer=Absolutely not. There is no inherent conflict between OER, alignment with state standards (or any other standards), and quality. Indeed, because OER can be updated and improved upon by anyone, it is most likely that OER will be of higher quality than existing, proprietary resources. If you find an OER that can be improved upon, you should do it! Look at the entry on [http://wiki.creativecommons.org/I_would_like_to_use_OER_in_my_classroom,_but_I_cannot_afford_to_use_materials_that_are_not_reconciled_with_my_state_standards._Are_there_any_OER_available_for_which_this_has_been_done%3F alignment with state standards] for more information regarding finding OER that are so-aligned. We are in a time of transition, so while the OER you desire may be difficult to find now, we believe that it will only be a short time from now that the quantity and quality of OER available to teachers and learners around the world will vastly exceed that of closed resources. And you can help to get us there!
The Philippine Creative Commons is celebrating the 6th Birthday of Creative Commons and the 1st Anniversary of the CC-Ph 3.0 Licenses in a simple gathering of dining, drinking and singing of the hard working staff of CC-PH at Hapchan KTV and Restaurant, 418 Nuestra Senora de Guia, Ermita, City of Manila following the last meeting for the year of the Organizing Committee of the 2009 CC Asia Pacific Conference at the Arellano University School of Law (AUSL) at Taft Avenue, City of Pasay. In keeping with the CC tradition of "sharing" and in the spirit of the Yuletide season during these trying times for the global economy, CC-PH would cap its celebration by roaming some streets of Manila to personally share some food and gifts to street children.

CC-PH greets one and all Happy Birthday, a blessed Christmas, and a prosperous New Year.

The DiscoverEd project is a scalable search of educational resources with a special emphasis on Open Educational Resources (OER). As such, it utilizes a web-wide index, promoting results which have been identified as OER. ccLearn is serving as an aggregation point for other organizations which have identified or produced OER.

Data are aggregated from several sources, including:

* RSS and Atom feeds (title, description and subject information)
* [http://www.openarchives.org/pmh/ OAI-PMH] repositories (OAI-DC metadata)
* Crawled pages (embedded [[RDFa]])

You can read more details about our [http://wiki.creativecommons.org/CcLearn_Search_Metadata metadata specifications]. The aggregated information, along with source annotations, is stored in a triple store. This information is available as a SPARQL endpoint.

'''[http://discovered.creativecommons.org/search/ DiscoverEd]''' is an experimental project from [http://learn.creativecommons.org ccLearn] which attempts to provide scalable search and discovery for educational resources on the web. Metadata, including the license and subject information available, are exposed in the result set. We are particularly interested in [http://learn.creativecommons.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/cclearn-explanations-oer-and-cc-licenses-05-apr-09.pdf open educational resources (OER)] and are collaborating with other OER projects to improve search and discovery capabilities for OER, using DiscoverEd and other available tools. Contact us if you are interested in this work.

DiscoverEd is a '''prototype''' intended to explore how structured data may be used to enhance the search experience; there are a number of [http://code.creativecommons.org/issues/issue?status=-1,1,2,3,4,5,6,7&@sort=-activity&@search_text=&@dispname=DiscoverEd&@filter=status,project&@group=priority&project=3&@columns=id,activity,title,creator,assignedto,status&@pagesize=50&@startwith=0 known issues].

DiscoverEd is also being discussed among participants of the [http://opened.creativecommons.org/OER_search_and_discovery OER search and discovery community]. You can also find [http://www.slideshare.net/ahrashb/ocwc-global-2009-solving-the-oer-discovery-problem-the-discover-ed-prototype slides on Slideshare] about DiscoverEd. If you are aware of any related resources, please post them to the [http://opened.creativecommons.org/OER_search_and_discovery OpenEd community site], and we will cross-post them to this FAQ as we can.

== Where do the results come from? ==

Results come from institutional and third party repositories who have expended time and resources ''curating'' the metadata. These ''curators'' either create or aggregate educational resources and maintain information about them.

Curators include [http://www.oercommons.org/ OER Commons], [http://www.cnx.org Connexions], [http://www.ocwconsortium.org/ the Open Courseware Consortium (OCWC)], [http://nsdl.org/ the National Science Digital Library (NSDL)], among others. You can examine the current list of both [http://discovered.creativecommons.org/search/browse/ feeds and curators here].

== How do I use DiscoverEd? ==

=== Searching for educational resources ===

To the typical user, DiscoverEd works just like any search engine. Simply type your query into the search box and hit "Search." Multiple words are automatically joined with "and," thus only returning resources containing every word.

You can also refine your search after you have entered an initial query by clicking on the magnifying glass next to one of the terms you see beneath each result. For example, if a resource is listed which has a CC BY (Creative Commons Attribution) license, you can click on the magnifying glass and the search will re-run your same query, but this time it will limit the results to only those resources that have a CC BY license.

To refine your search using the subject tags, simply click on any tag and the search will re-run the original query and that tag. Note that there may be more subject tags available - look for the small "+" button on the left side: clicking the "+" will show all of the tags.

=== Incorporating DiscoverEd on your own site ===

You can always link to DiscoverEd from your own site. If you would like DiscoverEd to include resources from a curator that is not included, send us a note and we will endeavor to include the new resources.

You can also [http://discovered.creativecommons.org/widget/ embed the DiscoverEd widget] into your site so that users of your site can type search queries into the search box directly on your site.

We also encourage people to create customized user-interfaces for DiscoverEd. You may change the look, name, and feel of DiscoverEd however you would like. For the greatest degree of control, you might want to install your own instance of DiscoverEd. Contact us if you are interested.

== How can I help? ==

Tell your friends! Put it on your own educational site! Send us feedback! DiscoverEd is still a prototype, which means that we could use all of the feedback we can get. The more that people use DiscoverEd and tell us what they like or don't like, the more likely we will be able to make improvements that work.

If you're a producer or curator of educational resources and would like to be included in the search, contact [[User:Ahrash_Bissell|Ahrash Bissell]] or [[User:Nathan_Yergler|Nathan Yergler]]. If you are using DiscoverEd, we want to hear from you. What works for you? What's broken? What can be improved?

We also encourage people to create customized user-interfaces for DiscoverEd. You may change the look, name, and feel of DiscoverEd however you would like. For the greatest degree of control, you might want to install your own instance of DiscoverEd. Contact us if you are interested.
Tell your friends! Put it on your own educational site! Send us feedback! DiscoverEd is still a prototype, which means that we could use all of the feedback we can get. The more that people use DiscoverEd and tell us what they like or don't like, the more likely we will be able to make improvements that work.
== How do I use DiscoverEd? ==

We are particularly interested in [http://learn.creativecommons.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/cclearn-explanations-oer-and-cc-licenses-05-apr-09.pdf open educational resources (OER)] and are collaborating with other OER projects to improve search and discovery capabilities for OER, using DiscoverEd and other available tools.

== How do I use DiscoverEd? ==

This page documents ways in which developers may use the data gathered by the project for other purposes.

== Data Gathered ==

The DiscoverEd project is a web-scale search of educational resources with a special emphasis on Open Educational Resources (OER). As such, it utilizes a web-wide index, promoting results which have been identified as OER. ccLearn is serving as an aggregation point for other organizations which have identified or produced OER.

Data is aggregated from several sources, including:

* RSS and Atom feeds (title, description and subject information)
* [http://www.openarchives.org/pmh/ OAI-PMH] repositories (OAI-DC metadata)
* Crawled pages (embedded [[RDFa]])

You can read more details about our metadata specifications [http://wiki.creativecommons.org/CcLearn_Search_Metadata here]. The aggregated information, along with source annotations, is stored in a triple store. This will be available soon as a SPARQL endpoint.
== Overview ==

This document outlines some of the metadata ccLearn is utilizing for the [[DiscoverEd]] project. These metadata are collected from embedded [[RDFa]] at crawl time. We also look for these metadata in feeds (RSS, Atom) and OAI-PMH harvests, although these are considered as a way to bootstrap the metadata corpus. While the metadata store may include additional information from resources, these fields are exposed by default in the search results.

* '''Title''' (
[http://dublincore.org/documents/dcmi-terms/#terms-title DCT:title]
): A brief descriptive title for the resource.
* '''Summary''' (
[http://dublincore.org/documents/dcmi-terms/#terms-description DCT:description]
): A relatively short summary or synopsis of the resource.
* '''Education level''' (
[http://dublincore.org/documents/dcmi-terms/#terms-educationLevel DCT:educationLevel]
): What grade(s) or age-level(s) this material is suitable for.
* '''Subject''' (
[http://dublincore.org/documents/dcmi-terms/#terms-subject DCT:subject]
): The subject(s) of the resource; e.g., math.

__TOC__

== Vocabulary ==

=== Specifying Subject ===

The subject refers to the actual content in the resource; i.e., what is this resource ''about''? For many resources, more than one subject will be necessary; in this case, specify multiple subject elements. We ask that you try to limit the contents of the subject to only those subjects that are objectively reflective of the entire resource. Other types of categories (opinions, metrics, etc) may have other vocabularies available which are more appropriate.

=== Specifying Education level ===

The education level should indicate all levels (student ages) for which the resource is deemed appropriate. The education level should be labeled using the [http://dublincore.org/documents/dcmi-terms/#terms-educationLevel DCT:educationLevel] term.

Though we will accept any descriptions that seem appropriate to you, please consider using one of the following schemas:

* primary, secondary, tertiary, adult;
* K,1,2,3,...,20 (where the number refers to the actual grade-level).

You may include equivalent terms as well by specifying more than one value for
DCT:educationLevel
. For example, you might include a
DCT:educationLevel
for
9
,
10
, and
secondary
.

=== Specifying Language ===

When specifying the language for a resource, the value should be specified as described by [http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc4646.txt RFC-4646]. For example,
en
for English. To distinguish English (United States) from English (United Kindgom), the language would be specified as
en-US
and
en-GB
, respectively.

In an Atom 1.0 feed, the language is specified as the
xml:lang
attribute of the
content
element. Multiple languages in a single entry is not supported.

=== Embedding license data ===

The resource license should be communicated using the stable URL of the license. For example, http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/.

See the [[Syndication|CC with syndication formats]] documentation for more information on including this is a bootstrap feed.

== Examples ==

=== [X]HTML + [[RDFa]] ===

The following is an example of how a resource at http://ocw.example.org/math/101 could be annotated with machine-readable metadata, including license and attribution information. This is our preferred manner for encoding this information as it exposes the metadata to a much wider range of clients.

Math 101

by John Q. Public

Basic mathematics for 5th graders

Subjects: Math

Grade level: 5

Language: English

License: Attribution 3.0

Lorem ipsum, etc, etc.

If a site aggregates resources such that the metadata appear on a page other than the actual resource, the
about
attribute can be used to indicate that the metadata are about a different resource. For example, the following page could be published at
'''http://commons.oer.example.org/math/101'''
and still refer to the same resource as the previous example:

OER Site

== Overview ==

* '''Title''' (
[http://dublincore.org/documents/dcmi-terms/#terms-title DCT:title]
): A brief descriptive title for the resource.
* '''Summary''' (
[http://dublincore.org/documents/dcmi-terms/#terms-description DCT:description]
): A relatively short summary or synopsis of the resource.
* '''License''' (
[http://dublincore.org/documents/dcmi-terms/#terms-license DCT:license]
,
[http://creativecommons.org/ns cc:license]
,
[http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml/ xhtml:license]
): The URL of the work's license; e.g.,
<nowiki>http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/</nowiki>
.
* '''Education level''' (
[http://dublincore.org/documents/dcmi-terms/#terms-educationLevel DCT:educationLevel]
): What grade(s) or age-level(s) this material is suitable for.
* '''Subject''' (
[http://dublincore.org/documents/dcmi-terms/#terms-subject DCT:subject]
): The subject(s) of the resource; e.g., math.

__TOC__

== Vocabulary ==

=== Specifying Subject ===

=== Specifying Education level ===

* primary, secondary, tertiary, adult;
* K,1,2,3,...,20 (where the number refers to the actual grade-level).

You may include equivalent terms as well by specifying more than one value for
DCT:educationLevel
. For example, you might include a
DCT:educationLevel
for
9
,
10
, and
secondary
.

=== Specifying Language ===

=== Embedding license data ===

The resource license should be communicated using the stable URL of the license. For example, http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/.

See the [[Syndication|CC with syndication formats]] documentation for more information on including this is a bootstrap feed.

== Examples ==

=== [X]HTML + [[RDFa]] ===

The following is an example of how a resource at http://ocw.example.org/math/101 could be annotated with machine readable metadata, including license and attribution information. This is our preferred manner for encoding this information as it exposes the metadata to a much wider range of clients.

xmlns:cc="http://creativecommons.org/ns#">

OER Site

Math 101

by John Q. Public

Basic mathematics for 5th graders

Subjects: Math

Grade level: 5

Language: English

License: Attribution 3.0

Lorem ipsum, etc, etc.

If a site aggregates resources such that the metadata appears on a page other than the actual resource, the
about
attribute can be used to indicate that the metadata is about a different resource. For example, the following page could be published at
'''http://commons.oer.example.org/math/101'''
and still refer to the same resource as the previous example:

OER Site

Math 101

Basic mathematics for 5th graders

__NOTOC__
== What is this? ==

'''[http://discovered.creativecommons.org/search/ DiscoverEd]''' is an experimental project from [http://learn.creativecommons.org ccLearn] which attempts to provide web-scale search over educational resources. Metadata, including the license and subject information available is exposed in the result set.

== Where do the results come from? ==

Results come from institutional and third party repositories who have expended time and resources ''curating'' the metadata. These ''curators'' either create or aggregate educational resources and maintain information about them.

== How can I help? ==

If you're a producer or curator of educational resources and would like to be included in the search contact [[User:Ahrash_Bissell|Ahrash Bissell]] or [[User:Nathan_Yergler|Nathan Yergler]]. If you're an educator, we want to hear from you. What works for you? What's broken? What can be improved?
== Data Gathered ==

* [http://www.openarchives.org/pmh/ OAI-PMH] repositories (OAI-DC metadata)
* Crawled pages (embedded [[RDFa]])

The aggregated information, along with source annotations, is stored in a triple store. This will be available soon as a SPARQL endpoint.
