Creative Commons Qatar is the Qatar affiliate of Creative Commons, a non-profit organization committed to realizing the full potential of the Internet. Creative Commons develops, supports, and stewards legal and technical tools that maximizes digital creativity, sharing, and innovation.
Creative Commons Qatar is officially hosted by the Supreme Council of Information and Communication Technology (ictQATAR), the government agency in Qatar responsible for technology policy and regulating the telecommunications market. The affiliate has adopted a multi-stakeholder approach in terms of its governance, operations and outreach. Core leadership includes a community lead from ictQATAR and a legal lead from Al Jazeera, however a much broader community is engaged to set affiliate goals, objectives and activities. There are approximately 15 members of the CC Qatar steering community, including individuals from museums, news outlets, universities, graphic design, publishing, research, web development and government. Committee meetings are held three times a year, and specific roles, responsibilities and tasks are assigned within each meeting. Regular updates are shared within the committee through a group email, and external communications are shared with the broader community through the affiliate’s bilingual website (www.creativecommons.qa), and via Twitter and Facebook.
In terms of funding, ictQATAR has a set programmatic budget for CC Qatar and allows numerous staff members to support the affiliate as part of their core job function. Numerous other organizations support CC Qatar by directly sponsoring events, providing free meeting space, or allowing staff to work on various CC projects. As the affiliate matures, the goal is to have even more varied channels of funding and support, helping ensure sustainability of CC Qatar.
