On this PresentSound, the Del Sol will explore in detail the magic of Ben Johnston's 10th Quatet and the beautiful world of just intonation. This tuning system makes use of perfect ratios between all notes and creates harmonies that can be both powerful as well as mysterious. While many musical traditions in the world use versions of pure ratios in their tuning, Europeans in the 18th century began popularizing even-tempered harmonies in order to change keys freely without creating major dissonance. If you've ever wondered why Midi string chords don't sound nearly as rich as real instrument, the reason is because of just intonation. While all these different systems can sound complicated in theory, the Del Sol will be demonstrating real-life examples. As the saying goes, "A song is worth 1001 words..."
